Re: I think depression is bullshit [Re: Ravus]

Of course, one always returns to the case where depression doesn't seem to have any inherent cause. Some would likely claim "there's always a cuase, it's just hidden" but I'm not sure this is always so. While a response such as depression is likely very complex, IMO the role of a biochemical mediator is very plausible. Take this website for instance, most that frequent the shroomery are aware of the very complex emotions/effects of drugs across classes.

Western medicine treats conditions and diseases aggressively. When someone is in great pain they are treated for it. A doctor will usually not say: "pain is a natural process so suck it up and learn from it". Depression is no different, it's aggressively treated like other medical conditions. Also, keep in mind that going through months of psychotherapy takes considerable resources, money and effort. In light of those things, medication seems to make sense IMO.

...the whole experience is (and is as) a profound piece of knowledge.  It is an indellible experience; it is forever known.  I have known myself in a way I doubt I would have ever occurred except as it did.

...most subjects find the experience valuable, some find it frightening, and many say that is it uniquely lovely.

Swami may be a little touchy on this issue as he's personally experienced it, but that aside, I think what he's taking issue with is your comment:

It shows it's a natural human reaction

Pneumonia is a natural human reaction too.

and like most natural reactions, we shouldn't be numbing it down in millions of people with synthetic drugs.

What do you propose, then?

People who are chronically depressed cannot be fixed by talk, or feel-good thinking, or psychotherapy. It's easy for you and me to think these people are wimps to rely on medication, but you and I can't know until we've been in their shoes.

Chronically depressed people are often that way despite having a great life. They sit there depressed and can't even quantify why they're depressed. It's this inability to point a finger at what's making them depressed that makes non-drug techniques fail to work. If you don't know why you're depressed, you can't talk about it.

My ex used to be inconsolably depressed all the time; the only answer I ever got when I asked why was: "I don't know why I'm depressed. I just am". This despite having a great life.

That serotonin-mediating drugs can change the disposition of depressed people when nothing else works is convincing evidence that the problem is physiological, not psychological.

Few people object to treating pneumonia with antibiotics, why not chronic depression with SSRIs?  :sun:

Republican Values:

1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you.
2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.
