There have been several studies that show any type of meditation lowers stress. Stress is a killer, so less stress should relate to longer lives.

It's very logical, anything that can minimize stress in your life can prolong your life under normal conditions (car accidents and genetic illnesses don't cout of course because they are not caused by your way of life)

Yes, well, I was in teacher-training once upon a time, three weeks away from being initiated by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in Switzerland when I dropped out. They called me once or twice, the second time sounding somewhat threatening. After I discovered the meaning of the puja that we all had to recite in Sanskrit, the source of the mantras and what they were in the classic literature (not merely sounds of "Creative Intelligence" but 'entities' that were being invited to indwell the Lotus of the Heart), I left. I have still meditated over the years (as needed), not 20 minutes, twice a day while sitting, and NOT with my TM mantra!
