Whats YOUR favorite bulk substrate

My buddy is starting to get into some bulk action, and is wondering what all his fellow mycologists like to use. I am thinking straw just for the sake of starting simple, but I hear that poo/straw is a little more contam resistant. Theres also a huge range of mushroom compost out there too, so, what do you guys use?

Ive heard the poo straw mix is good. With straigh up straw you have to case it b/c it will dry to quickly.

Straight horse poo. Better than straw by a long shot, more contam resistant too. Easier to keep hydrated through several flushes (re: straw drying out). All the nutrients you'll ever need can be found in straight poo.

Does straw contam alot easier than horse poo or is it more just the water content and nutrient level in poo that makes it better?

The word is horse poo... but I haven't been able to try it yet... so MY favorite (that I've tried) is a straw/worm castings mix. I think it's the next best thing if you don't want to deal with tracking down a stable, leeching, etc...

Straight horse poo, with a bit of straw, coco coir, verm and worm castings added, spawned with 25% spawn (composed of rye/WBS with maybe some rye grass seed).
Damn it I just relized again you bring up an old thread...this ones 3 months old..quit doing that!

I don't like spawning anything. Last two runs I've just used spawn bags with about 1:1 WBS:manure plus some vermiculite to get the water right. A large spawn bag can hold enough to produce about 5 ounces dry. A good sized pressure cooker (say 22 quart or lareger) can easily hold 4 or so spawn bags (do the math and you'll get the point). Yeah, you'll need to get an impulse sealer on Ebay and spawn bags (about $70 total), but IT IS worth the expense to do it right if you are growing bulk. Believe me doing shit on the cheap will just give you a headache. Even if you work for McDonald's you should be able to afford it.
Use liquid culture technique with frequent or even constant stirring (if you have a magnetic stirrer) and inoculate with LC into the spawn bags. Using this exact technique, I went from mycelium syringe to trays in the fruiting chamber in a little over 2 weeks. The first flush will probably be about 2 more weeks. That's mycelium syring to bulk harvest in 4 weeks.
