Best bulk substrate and casing?

I want my final fruiting setup to be a bulk substrate + casing, rather than just cakes or grain jars. What's the consensus 'round here on the best bulk substrate, both in terms of yield and in terms of less succeptibility to contamination? Pasturized manure/straw compost? Or perhaps a combo of compost with rye grain or brown rice? Or something else? Also, what's the consensus on the best casing mixture? And what are the optimal depths of the substrate layer and the casing layer? Thanks, Mycologist

Seems a mycologist would have these answers..... You are going to get 10 different answers from 10 different people so I won't even start... Go READ....decide what is best for YOU...

> Seems a mycologist would have these answers..... Not necessarilly. Which bulk substrate/casing combo produces the best yields of mushrooms under home cultivation conditions is more a matter of being an experienced cultivator (which I'm not, yet) than being an academically trained mycologist. By analogy, if you wanted to get tips on getting a good yield of really tasty tomatoes, you'd be better off asking an organic farmer than asking a botany professor. > You are going to get 10 different answers from 10 different > people so I won't even start... Nothing wrong with that ? I can judge which answers make the most sense and speak best to my situation. M

Good Morning:) personaly I like pasturized wheat straw and/or compost. They both give good results I posted pics in the vendors forum called more huge mushrooms from the docs compost pile if you care to do a search. This should give you a better idea of why and pics to prove my decision as to why. I am leaving for my trip soon enjoy all of you.

I dont know about bulk yet but for casings Peat Moss kicked some ass.... Manure of course is great (not from personal experience mind you) but its alittle more difficult to use I think. Tell me something good then I might agree with you..Edited by Billyblastoff on 09/09/01 02:15 PM.

mycologist - You said you were not an experienced cultivator. Have you ever grown before? If not, you would be well advised to try a couple cake runs first to familiarize yourself with the realities of what conditions are best suited for success. If you have had success at cakes, you could then go on to casing and finally to bulk. For bulk, I would use a grain spawn in pasturised straw with a pasturised dung/peat casing. This might not be the best formula, but it has always performed well for me. If you are a mycologist, or even an university student, I'm sure you realize the importance of progressive learning. Just because you can hammer in a nail, doesn't mean you can build a boat that floats! Start at the begining and you'll get those tasty tomatoes

> You said you were not an experienced cultivator. Have you > ever grown before? Yes and no. I haven't grown Psilocybe, or even Agaricus, so this kind of cultivation is new to me. The only mushrooms I've ever grown are from an oyster mushroom kit someone gave to me. However, as an undergraduate, I used to work in a mycological lab with cultures of lower fungi (oomycetes, chytrids, etc). As a result, I have sterile technique, media making, mycelial culturing, etc down pat. What I haven't ever done is gone through all the steps from just having a spore print all the way to having a crop of mushrooms, which is why I'm seeking out advice on the finer points of cultivation. > If not, you would be well advised to try a couple cake runs > first to familiarize yourself with the realities of what > conditions are best suited for success. If you have had > success at cakes, you could then go on to casing and finally > to bulk. I think that's good advice. I'll try to get at least one successful cased cake fruiting before moving onto a bulk substrate. BTW, why is PF's rice cake tek so strongly prefered over the traditional rye-grain method? M

Your lab experience will be an advantage for you, but your culture is only the first step. The mycelial growth from spawn/substrate to fruiting is where your experience is needed, and certainly more time consuming. Why the PF tek? Because it has the best success rate for the inexperienced. It is simple, straightforward and very forgiving when it comes to posible contamination. Grains are generally considered a second step, using a casing. When you have success there, you can then use the grain as spawn for a bulk substrate. Hope this helps. Enjoy.
