Rye Grain As Bulk Substrate

Sorry if this has been answered before... but I have done the PF tek a few times before with a small amount of success. I am starting it again and seem to have it down. My concern is that I dont think it will produce the kind of yields that I am looking for. So I realize I need to use some type of bulk substrate. Stamets book says that you can use rye grain as your bulk substrate if you choose. But I am not reading very much about people doing this. Is it possible to use rye as the bulk substrate, or how about rye and just the worm castings but skipping the straw step. What kind of yield differences are there. What do you guys recommend for someone who wants to start using bulk substrates. And what is a good estimate for a decent yield in a fairly small operation per month? Thanks

Rye works great. Do you have a pressure cooker that gets to 15 P.S.I. ? You can yield very good quantities of mushrooms from trays of cased rye grain spawn. A good average for yield is 10 grams dry per cup of dry rye grain. You can get better, you can get worse. Mushrooms are smaller with rye grain, but not always.

I have a pressure cooker that gets to 12 psi. Is that good enough? I just have to do it longer right? Is it worth it to got the next step to a straw culture or should I just do the rye and case it? There are some teks out there I have red but just to clarify. After I had full colonization of the rye I would put it in the bottom of a rubbermaid container right? then case it with what? do I need to mist it? How do I keep the humidty right? Are there any good teks that have to do with this? Thanks

Go to http://www.mushmush.nl/methods/ownmethod.htm.
This method works well, you just might use a bit less water with your rye. like 100g rye and 110 g water for a pint.
