Is there ANY way of using rye grain bulk substrate Without using a pressure cooker/canner? I dont have one and i'm also poor but i dont want to give up... Are there any ways to have the rye absorb moisture and be equally sterilized as with a pressure cook/canner?

Hmmmm not that I know of. Pressure cookers are really for killing any unwanted contaminates/endospores/enzymes that are on the grain. Pressure cookers can reach higher temperatures than normal boiling. This greatly helps the rye. As for the moisture content, some people actually have problems with the rye to water ratio because of the heat and added water in the pressure cooker. I would say for the heck of it.... Try rye or birdseed in the microwave? But that can be a little dangerous! As for the cost of a pressure cooker, look here - http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&SortProperty=MetaLowestPriceSort&query=pressure+cooker&ht=1&combine=y&st=2 There are come here that are under $5.00

Theres a tek out there that uses hydrogen peroxide. It eliminates the need for sterilization. You have to pay for the tek tho, bout $30 I think. I've been waiting for someone to spill the beans on the formula myself rather than spend the money. -Axi
