Using Broths to Inoculate Bulk Substrates
    #1663893 - 06/26/03 07:11 AM (21 years, 2 days ago)

What would be the best route to go using either potato dextrose or malt extract broths to inoculate a bulk substrate? Would one simply take the mycelium filled jar of broth and apply that directly to bulk substrate or should one use the broth to inoculate a whole grain jar first then use that to inoculate the bulk substrate?

Also, how many jars of mycelium filled broth should be used to inoculate a given amount of substrate?
Specs:
PDY and MA broths available
Bulk substrate is wheat straw, cow dung, and worm castings
Growth chamber is 32x18 in at the base

Thats roughly 4 square feet so I would guess that if you applied it directly to the substrate that 2 would be enough but I would probably use 3 to promote more rapid growth.

Possibly use 2 for the straw/dung/casting layer than 1 additional for a top layer of dung and castings only.

innoculant > grain/cakes > bulk substrait. You really don't need to use broth unless you have an extreamly large ammount your doing, in which case you would use it like spores. You can get more than you need by innoculation 10 or so quart jars with rye. they will innoc alot of dung or what not.
