 Funny and disturbing smoking chimp

I'm sure you have seen him on the news.
  
He has been smoking for 20 years. Funny, yet disturbing. Many of us smoke, and the first thing i thought was "shows how humans and other primates aren't completely different"
Then I thought about the Libertarians.... Do you think this chimp has the "right" to smoke? Does libertarian philosophy apply to other primates?
Immediately after that i thought of animal rights activists... I'm sure they would be against this.
Personally i think it is bad. But should he be forced to stop?
Not to serious of a post i know, maybe a nice diversion from politics and war.

Oh that's a tough one!
I would tend to say yes, he should be forced to stop. First, because it is in the best interests of his continued health. Second, because while being a chimp he may be intelligent enough to put a smoke in his mouth and smoke it...I highly doubt he is intelligent enough to understand the negative effects that smoking has on his body.
I'm not an animal rights activist or anything close to it (I love steak) but I think this could be a clear-cut case of exploitation. Why is this chimp being GIVEN smokes? Isn't he in a zoo or something, and aren't zoos generally worried about the health of their animals? To me, this looks like an excellent photo-op to get more tourists at a zoo somewhere.
If that's the case, then they are intentionally hurting this animal for monetary gain. I don't think that's a good thing to do.

Patrons of the zoo keep give them to him. The zoo is in South Africa. The keepers tried to take them away but he hides them.

Oh, well in that case this just speaks volumes about the generall shitty attitude that most humans have towards other animals.

When i was younger my gang of friends and i would get the dog/cat high....
Thats wrong i guess.... but we wouldnt force them to take the hit in the face... and i dont think that the chimp was forced to smoke.
I do think its wrong though.
Regardless everytime i see the photo i laugh. 
Also if you the the video on the news, its amazing how he holds it and smokes it as though he is human... Monkeys and Apes are amazing animals

It's his choice to smoke. Should you smack a dog in the face every time he licks his nuts because it's "dirty"?

A dog won't get lung cancer and die from licking his nuts.
Lame example 
If I walked up to a chimp in a zoo and gave him a lethal dose of arsenic, which he then ate because he chose to (ie: he's a chimp and doesn't know what it is/does)...would that be wrong?

I see no differences between a chimp smoking and an Alabaman smoking, as they are both ignorant of the effects of it, yet I support their right to do it.
A lot of people don't know the damage that smoking does, yet they do it. If the chimp wants a smoke, I don't see a huge problem with that. Nonsmoking chimps die everyday, after all, and there's worse problems facing animals in zoos than whether a primate likes to light up a few smokes.
Is the chimp above 18 if his age was converted to human years? I'm willing to bet he is, and therefore the same rights should be given to other primates as we would to humans.

I'd give the chimp every right available to a human assuming it'd act like one; but the minute it starts flinging shit, and hanging on trees... 
I wouldn't mind a chimp as a drinking buddy.
