Does anyone know af any good (cheap) heating techniques for colonization of jars? I have been leaving them under the bed in california, where it is about 80-85F every day, is this enough heat, or should I employ artificial heat?

That is perfect tempurature. I recently made a little incubator. Its simply jars in a tupperware wrapped in a black sweatshit with a light shining and inch or so above it. Keeps it a solid 83-86 degrees.

Not everyone agrees that the mid 80'sF are the best temps. Some belive that the strain envolved can make the bigest diference. Some of the Mexican ones, so I have been told can do there best over 90 degress (for conlinzation).. However the green mold thrives in the same range. It seems to me that, for most cubes anyway, that the mid 70s, or even as low as 72 degress can help slow down any green mold growth.

If you really want a cheap method for an incubator try this: Take a sterile ten gallon aqurium. Grab a cheap aqurium fish tank heater. Useing a wire coat hanger bend it so it can hold the heater verticly with it's base touching the bottom. Sit the jars covered with foil into the tank. Then slooowly fill the base of the tank with luke-warm water about 1/4 to 1/3 of the height of the jars (no spashing). Use a glass suction type aqarium thermonitor for your gauge when adjusting the heater to the right temp. - and be sure and give the tank at least an hour to respond to the heater setting. Covering the tank is the only tricky part. It's not sugested to completly cover the tank cuz of the likelyhood of the condisation falling on top of the jars. So one needs to watch how much steam builds up over a few hours and when it does uncover part of the top so that the tank can "breath" a little thus reduceing any "rain" factor. Many can build this out of junk that they have in there basements.
