The big rubbermaid containers worked awesome for me so far, but i was just thinking about this maybe less chance of contamination with all these jars spread out!

Straw doesn't provide enough of the right nutrients. Its a casing material. Its an awesome casing material, but you need some grain in there.

This is one of the best write ups on a straw tek that I've seen.

funny you should say this.

dude just made up a batch of straw the other day, and had a little left over, so instead of wasting it, he said, "what the hell can I put this in". So he looked around and found a 2 liter of sprite which he just finished. He cut the plastic bottle so it was like a cup(about 6 inches high) and layered in some straw and some birdseed. He was thinking, oh cool straw cakes, he is probably going to take one out and see how it fruits like a cake, and case the other one right in the bottle bottom...

I am beginning to think it is all about how easily accessable the nutrients are to the mycelium. Somewhat along the lines of how it is much easier to break down simple sugars like glocose or sucrose as opposed to more complex long molecular chains... I've been thinking about this, but alot of the answers haven't come to me yet...

I have never heard of straight spores being able to inoculate wheat straw directly.

The best analogie that I can think of is fire.
We all know that trees can burn.

Does one truly expect to set a tree on fire with there Bic lighter?
Of course not.... we would need to start off with smaller things first (like sticks/branches)

Brown rice cakes (PF)- spawn- are basicly the charcol fluid to get the tougher stuff going. (with this tek)

Are you sure? The whole idea of this thread is a jar tech. I beleive I just saw a pic somewhere of cubensis fruiting out of a cased straw jar.

Well, somehow we all got off of the specific subject from the "get-go".

A jar/straw tek? - Not for syringe use.

Unless someone can prove that a spore syringe can inoculate straw.

UPDATE: Man, I keep misreading threads tonight. Can someone clarify this? Are these wheat cakes being inoculated with spores just like th PF TEK does?

Josh I can't wait to see how your straw b+ tray turns out, i'm considering this as well, although I can't see it doing any better than compost, just a hell of a lot cheaper. I'm gonna order some of the zoodoo compost Ralph uses, can't wait to try it.
