New Hampshire, Amanita Muscaria or Panterina?
    #4045474 - 04/12/05 11:39 AM (18 years, 11 months ago)

Greetings, Wise Ones. Attached a pic of what I thought might be Muscaria, but now not so sure. Looks a lot like a Pantherina, but just don't know. And what do YOU think.

Thanks.
Apollo

Meanwhile, for anyone ambitious enough to look, the pic's in the gallery under Apollo.

Thanks.

When you uploaded your pic, there was a window with some code in it. To attach your pic you need to cut and paste that code into your post.

Your photo appears to be an Amanita muscaria, but there isn't a very good view of the volva (the cuplike structure at the base of the stem). For Amanitas you should carefully dig up the entire mushroom (some of them have rooting bases that can go down several inches) and show that to us.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks for the tip.

Have a few more pics, but apparently too large to upload. Bottom line, how can I be sure these are "safe"??

Cute little fellas, aren't they? My understanding is, soft yellow-orange coloring is common for Amanita found in this neck'o the New Hampshire woods. Please advise if I'm wrong about that. Will send a couple pics of the dried shrooms, volva details may be apparent.

Thanks all.

Personally, I have found such a wide variety of agarics in my area, that it is not worth trying to id them (unless that it what you are looking for)
The effects are undersirable, imo, and they have close cousins that are poisonous.
That doesn't stop me from hunting them tho, they're fun to find.
Yours look like pantherina, but I think it's impossible to key it to a genus w/out a microscope.
Nice pics

Here's a nice little link for large photos http://www.imageshack.ws/

While we are on the panterina topic, I have long been wondering about these:

I do see the difference. Pic below, taken from Bouncing Bear Botanicals, identified as Amanita Muscaria var. Formosa, appears to be what I've got.

Thanks.

Do not identify by picture alone if you plan on ingesting these. There is a lot more then looks to go by, especially in the Aminitas.

Eaten in small amounts A. muscaria and A. Pantherina have both been safe in my experiences. I would recomed that you safety test by always
eating no more that 1/4 cap at first. Some strains of muscaria and pantherina are very potent and 1/4 cap is more than enough.

Also these mushrooms can cause significant nausea, enough to puke in some casses. This can be the case on as little as 1/4 cap.

What you have there looks like the yellow A muscaria. In my personal experience this one is the most likely to cause sickness. I have eaten yellow muscaira on about 4 occasions and have gotten sick every time. I have eaten panthers twice with no sickness at all, though these were both from the same batch. I have never eaten the red A muscaria, but I did once eat an extract I bought online. The extract was intoxicating, but produced no ilness. I don't know if the same would hold true for the whole mushroom.

Toxin levels also probably vary alot from strain to strain and region to region. So people may get very different effects from one trip to the next.
