RANT?The Shroomery and Freedom of Speech.

Freedom of speech is both promoted and destroyed in The Shroomery. Not that there is a guarantee of freedom of speech at The Shroomery. Anyone who registers is subject to the rules and regulations of The Shroomery. Or are they? Many of The Shroomerys' own rules and regulations are subjectively mandated by the Moderators, thusly rendering the rules of each respective forum nearly useless(on account of the rules being subjectively exercised). For example: A post by an American that is deleted by a Canadian Moderator. The poster follows the rules to the best of their ability with no intention of breaking them. Then a Canadian Moderator deletes the post/thread, and directs the original poster to please read (ahem, RE-read) the rules without citing the specific rule/s broken and the capacity in which the deleted thread/post broke them. That's weak. The American/ Canadian scenario for purposes here is used to illustrate the fact that there are differences in interpretations of "Free Speech" and The Rules of The Shroomery. As long as the Rules of The Shroomery are subjectively executed Freedom of Speech is not fully realized. There is a necessity for objective "Moderating". While this is a virtual community with no geographical borders, each registered member should be able to express themselves in accordance with the rules of their own land(and to the best of their ability in accordance with the Rules of The Subjective Shroomery) without being subject to the laws/rules of another land in the form of a Moderators' interpretation of the rules/laws of The Shroomery and their respective country.
Freedom of Speech is both liberated and confined by The Shroomery. (This post was not inspired by actual incidents known to the poster and is by all means aimed at the realization of a better Shroomery)

I agree that moderators should try to interpret and enforece their forum "laws" as objectively as possible. However I think there is already somewhat of a system of "due process" or "checks and balances" in place, if you will, in that most forums have several moderators, and that the site itself has several administrators. If a Shroomery citizen feels that his free speech has been unfairly stifled by a mod, I'm sure he or she could take the case to another moderator or admin for reconsideration-- An "appeal," if you will. Sounds pretty democratic to me...

I quess it depends on what one considers "censorship", I suppose. They do censor many things, like ad hominem arguments in S&P and PA&L and inappropiate postings (tubgirl.jpg in the Pub or kiddy porn anywhere, for example), done mostly to facilitate the smooth functioning of these forums. I really have no objection to this, but I do draw the line at censoring those with unpopular views, which I have really seen very little of around here...

Ranting about a limit to "free speech" in a place where free speech has no meaning (a privately owned BB, for example) is rather pointless.
If you come to my house and start saying things I just plain don't like, I have every right to kick you out of my house and off of my property.
Now instead of doing that, the Admins here are incredibly tolerant of things like this. To this date I am not aware of anyone who has been removed from this site solely because the staff did not like their opinion.
So, then...what's the rant about? Did Rono delete a thread of yours or something

Seriously.
If someone came to a party at your house and crapped in your tuba. Would it be hypocritical of you to censor his or her "art" by kicking them the fuck out of your house?

No Rono didn't delete a thread of mine, the first post was a completely hypothetical situation. I personally could care less if one my threads or posts are deleted, they are virtual things of in-consequence to me. I was just looking for feedback and opinions. Hence the ? This thread was inspired by the incident of Gerhard Haderer a famous Austrian cartoonist that was sentenced to 6 months jail by a Greek court for the following reason: he published a book called "The Life of Jesus" where he compared the effects of frankincense with those of cannabis.
A case of someone from another country tracking down and convicting someone from another country over something that should be protected under free speech.

Mmmmm, frankincense.
But seriously... Austria allowed the extradition of this guy over something so stupid? Or was he conviced in Greece in absentia?

6 months in jail > banned from a BB

Inspired by, not based on. I wasn't imagining quite that literal of a tie in. I now bestow the title of Captain Literal upon thee trendal.j/k It's just the way the virtual world imitates(maybe not quite as literally) the real world that is intriguing. The problem is, in most cases, American internet law.
Due to the nature of this BB, and the location of its servers, The Shroomery has to watch what people say. Free speech is only allowed to a degree in America... American websites must obey the Laws of the country they reside within.
The VAST majority of Shroomery rules are set in place to prevent laws from being broken... so there will still be a Shroomery in the future.
It is a compromise.
If you want Free Speech in America, you must pay for it.
