hmm..execution was abolished in Croatia in 1990. But the fact that Croatia was part of yougoslavia before 1990 doesn't change the fact that it is a country that has a very old identity and culture. The American identity (if there actually is one) is only 200 years old.


An interesting difference i found when i compared america to other democratic countries, is that generally, the time gap between a country's official abolition of execution and the country's last execution is around 10-30 years.

For example in Italy it was abolished in 1994, but the last execution was in 1947. In Holland, abolition is in 1982 and the last execution in 1952. Canada's abolition was in 1976 and last execution in 1962.

So this leaves me to think that there's something particular and different about the american mentality that makes it how it is
OR
that its just that the american identity is still young and has not been given enough time to fully mature, and that we'll probably have to wait a LONG ASS time before we can see an abolition of any sort.



Nevertheless, lets not forget that execution has been abolished in 12 states of America, and these 12 states are mostly North Eastern states, so this kinda goes along with my theory of a nation's age of identity, because North Eastern states are the states that were the first to be colonized, so they have the oldest "culture" and "identity" in America.

No, you misunderstood, there was no exectution here even before 90's, I was just talking about democracy vs. socialism in general.
I don't know how long was there no execution here, I think somewhere 60's or something like that. Last time I saw execution mentioned was in an old WW2 movie. I'm really not sure how long was there execution.

What I was trying to measure is for low long was america VS other countries declared as a democratic country. America was founded on democracy, yet it compares to some countrys who decided to switch to democracy a couple of decades before.

But I admit it is not a fair comparison since Croatia is a very small country (4.5 million people) and does not have a need for capital punishment like some huge lands like US have.

I believe the problem with US is its gene pool that was first established by "eager" and "active" genes, and only later cooled down with more passive genes.
But then again Australia started out as a prison colony, and they are not fameous as a warlike country.

I guess there just isn't any explanation for USA..

I just checked on the net..
It seems that you were right...there was death punishment in the law until '91 but was erased from the law when Croatia stoped being a part of Yugoslavia. The longes you can serve here now is 40 years no matter what you do.

I guess I just didn't hear it being used, so I thought there was no death punishment in Yugoslavia.

I guess what I'm saying is that we here on Balkan were supose to be primitive savages compared to ultrafree and democratic US, but it seems in some aspects it is vice versa

You see we are currently under US influence regarding the law, they are teaching us how to judge, we are the "undeveloped" ones. It's a paradox

nah man, i don't think the US influences our decisions in what laws we make. Each country has their unique set of laws.

And i think europeans know we don't have that much to learn from them. We make fine competitors on the economic market, we have competitive workers, we have good capability of industrial production and we have more consumers than they do.

I think Europe is going to have to be the one leading the way to a more peaceful and clean world. We know we can't count on america to do anything about the pollution, we know we can't count on them to make diplomatic approaches with other countries (instead of going to war against them), so we're going to have to step up as the new role models for other countries to follow.

Real democracy will have to find its place and squish itself in between the superleaders of the world and the human rights violators that are the USA and China

The western influenced laws are certainly not more liberal, but they are imposed on us because we are supose to enter EU soon (yea right!)
The nature of these reforms brings only more control, not liberty.
But most of these laws are of commercial and nature, so It will not affect the life of citizens.
