What's wrong with my shrooms?!
    #3886901 - 03/08/05 12:55 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Hi guys,
I've got this problem:
The mushrooms on my grow kit are growing slowly. They started to grow 25 days after I started the process ( shouldn't it be 10? ).
In the morning I leave for work, and when I get home, i can tell the diference, they are a bit bigger, but 1 week as passed and they are still small, the biggest is 1 inch tall, and there are only 8 visible mushrooms.
Plus, the first born, when it came to about half an inch tall, he stoped growing, and started to dry. I pulled it out. In the autopsy, I noticed the external layer was completly dried, the next layer was thin and green, or dark green, in the inside it was white.
So why are they growing so slowly? And why did they started to grow so late?
And what about the dead mushroom? Was it some kind of infection? If so should I throw the kit away and start with a new one?
I don't wanna go paranoid on my trip, thinking the mushrooms might be infected...
Thanks people!    :stoned:

i had the exact same problem from what im reading in your post it was because my relative humidity was too low but I was overmisting, so their skin appeared dry because the RH was low but then were turning blue (the caps on the pins will turn black) and aborting because I was overmisting thinking thats the same as RH :peace:

if you give us a more detailed idea of what kinda setup your using and what your temp/humidity levels are we could probably help you more.

i take it your new cuz your buying kits. first of all we'll start by saying some mushrooms grow faster than others. what strain are you using. second first flush is usually a small one. and third but not the least we need to know your humidity and temp cuz if your temp is around 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit growth will be dramatically slower. aim for temps in the mid 70's and high humidity.

Hi
Thank you for replying.
I'm no professional, in fact, this is the first time I have contact with mushrooms, I never took them, or had any in my hands ( except the dead one ).
I don't know what to say about humidity, I mean how do I measure it?
What I do is:
I spray the bag inside with sterile water, replace the air inside like once or twice a day, and leave the bag opened on the top.
On the temperature, well... It's to damm cold in my countrie this year, and I've only seen rain once this year.
What I do is:
I put the kit under a lamp, so it keeps warm...

I don't know anything about RH and overmoisting, I bought the kit because I wanted some shrooms the easy and fast way...

It's a Psylocibe Cubensis grow kit.

Inside my house it's about 16?C (celcius)

humidity is measured with a hygrometer. i bought one from pet-co (most pet shops have them ). temperature is pretty simple just make sure they go no higher than 95 degrees Fahrenheit because they die at i think 105.

Ok, I'm going to buy one!
But right now my priority is to know if there is some infection with the mushrooms.
I forgot to mention, some mushrooms are growing deformed...
:frown:
Here's some pictures:

a couple of deformed shrooms

pretty nasty...

where are the heads?

white stuff ( micelium?! )

what a hell is that?!

So there is something wrong right?
Should I throw them out?

Thank you!

I'd love to help you...but the coloring of your photo's really makes it hard to see what is going on with your grow kit...sorry.

I purchased it from azarius.net.
Well the mushroom color is pretty normal ( I guess ), they are white, or light brown, but they seem to be dry... like their skin was old or something...
But from the shape of the mushrooms, they really are NOT NORMAL huh?
I mean. they look like doformed...

If it were me, I would get a humidifyer(or by someother means), sounds like the humidity in the fruiting chamber is too low, may be causing the problems, doesnt sound too far fetched that that may be what's causing themutations and the "old skin"

As for the growing kit, I wouldn't bother with it, i would just do the PK Tek jar way to start off, then once you've gotten the hang on making cakes n jars n stuff, and know the symptoms of failure and sucess, and how to ix a situation, then I would go onto casing, which my FOAF greatly appreciates, because he is working on his first set of cakes as we speak, which are proceeding nicely

Sorry for being such a pain in the ass... and for my english not being that good.
Yes, once I have the time, I'll look in to the mushrooms cultivation with jars and stuff...
But right now, I want to know if I can still save this grow kit, if those deformed shrooms will return to normal, if not, can I eat them like this? Or if I have to wait for the second flush to get some good ones...
You see... a good friend of mine is going away for a long time, and I wanted one last shroom trip untill the end of this month.

munch em down. the deformed ones won't return to normal, but you
can still eat them. some people say they're stronger than normal.

ok, first off ,my 2 cents are this: READ READ READ!!! forget kits really, when you read and find out how cheap and easy it is to build your own kit, then you hardly want to fork out the $ that people are asking for the "ready-to-grow" kits. i think that the kits tend to make people believe they can just knock up a bag or jar and throw it in the grow chamber, and voila! mushies! well, unfortunately it doesn't really work too well that way, just read A LOT of material on this website, study for a solid week or two on your off time, and before you know it you will be building your own set-up for way less than half of what companies charge you for a kit. you might want to keep the kit as another growing chamber, but check in to doing it yourself. the regular PF Cake TEK is great for beginners, and the SHROOMpimp's Cake TEK is a good BRF+Verm+Brown rice is a good cake to case. well, as far as the infection, it's probably not infected. i give you an E+ for effort! keep on trying, it's a cool hobby huh?!?!?! well, good luck in your future grows!!!

I first, don't buy a kit, better to make your own, you gain a lot more experience. Read up on the PF-Tek.

2) This is lysol:
lysol picture... stil can't belive you don't know what lysol is...

3) get something that tell the humity and tempature. You need humitity high 90%-99%.

Sorry for not knowing what lysol is, perhaps in my language it has a different name...
And that picture is not very enlightning, I asked what lysol is, you show me a spray saying, lysol, wow... I feel like fukin Einstein now, thanks...
Don't take it the wrong way, just playing with you, hehe.
But from what I've heard, I guess you're right, grow kits suck. I'll look into the PF-Tek thing. Thank you for the help.
