imo soaking is still good, i see a faster colonization time with soaked and simmered rather than not.

Agreed! But no simmer is needed.

through experimentation, soaked and simmered vs just soaked has lead me to believe that soaked and simmered for 20ish minutes works alot better than just soaking. colonization time is faster.

i have soaked and simmerd everytime i have done it, i guess i should try

A) just soak
B)just simmer
C)just add the right amount of water and pc, i just dont know how much that would be so that would be hard.

Anyone have any theories why soaking and/or simmering wbs would lead to faster colonization over properly hydrated seed that doesn't go through this process? Or is it just that--an easier, more guaranteed way to get the optimal water content?
Thanks guys!

Re: myth Busted, wbs.... [Re: korins]

I am glad that korins has asked this very question. I have found that as far as colonization speed is concerned, the sunflower seeds or soaking/simmering do not change the speed. A FOAF raced 10 different jars of WBS, and although the level of growth differed in each jar at various times, they all finished within a few days of each other. IMHO, the soaking/simmering allows the WBS to soak up even more water. If you've ever simmered WBS, then you know that the kernels almost double in size after a good simmer. I assume that this would create larger flushes, considering the mushrooms would have a larger water supply to draw from.

I think that if you are going to just case the WBS directly, then removing the seeds and simmering will be your best bet. (removing the seeds would maximize the water retention by volume, as sunflower seeds don't absorb much water.)

But if you are planning on spawning bulk substrate, the seeds and the soaking probably don't matter as much as just having a lot of mycelium to transfer to your bulk.

My friend just leaves the seed intact, soaks for 24 hours, rinses ina collander, then PC's for 60 minutes. Works fine for him.

I think the faster colonization probably has something to do with softening/breaking down the shell of the grain. This would allow for the mycelium to more easily "harvest" the nutrients in the grain.

Its the best way to get proper water content. Soaking is fine by itself, IMO though, if your fruiting it, your missing out if you dont simmer. Extra water=extra yeild. Soaked and simmered rye (performs better then WBS fruiting directly IMO)

how long you guys let drain?

Those boxes were done Thursday night, G2G from 2 qts of multispore. Not quite 6 days and they're almost done. 2 tablespoons per qt.

I drain for 2 hours. Hell you can drain for more than that if you want. Millet holds moisture really well. As far as the sunflower seeds, they don't. But that doesn't matter.

I always add about 10% verm to my grains when they drain. After draining for about 20 minutes..pour in dry verm and mix it around. The grains should all be fully swelled with water, but the outsides shouldnt really look wet.

24 hour soak, wbs in one, rye in the other

Rye/wbs mix being strained after the simmer. Notice the steam. I never rinse my grain once, right after the simmer the water steams right off, also why it only takes me 10-20 minutes to drain that much grain (to the point where verm can be mixed in)

The mixture with verm fully strained and ready to be PCed:

After pressure cooking:

i drain for about 45 minutes, mizing the WBS around w/ my hand to make sure the real moist stuff on the bottom gets some air as well, and i also tilt the strainer to drain a couple times... when i can physically not get any more to drain, i then jar and PC

Good input guys! I agree that if fruiting wbs directly or even casing it, the water content is very important. Don't you all agree though, that once the wbs is transferred to a bulk substrate, the water content it had is far less important?

Re: myth Busted, wbs.... [Re: korins]
    #3861431 -

agreed korins... the water content for the grains is important when they're being colonized... when spawning w/ grains, the water content of the fully colonized grains doesn't really matter, but that importance of water content is passed on to the bulk subs before being spawned too, and i would say that thats even more important

I recommend against this, but I'm so clean that its not usually a problem. I also stopped the tub in tub incubator, I use a dry warmed closet, no water. Still not a good practice, but with that many jars, its easier to transport and take the chance of a problem. I did have a bit of green grow on a peice of cardboard once..never got in the jar though. The tyvek is a much better barrier then verm/foil and with grains I've found even green mold growing on the top of the tyvek doesnt contam the jar (had 4 like that from being flipped and none contamed even when cased).
