Popcorn VS. WBS colonization times?
    #4084883 -

I haven't had very good luck w/ WBS so far. I either get it too wet, too dry, or pop all the kernals. I've got it to colonize, just slowly, and not really strong. I was wondering how fast popcorn colonizes compared to WBS. I would probably soak the popcorn for 24 hours then simmer 45-60 min. Does popcorn bust as easy as WBS while simmering?

Ill also be inoculating the popcorn w/ LC made from karo water. Hopefully this will speed things up too.

i doubt theres really any difference in colonization times but with an LC it should colonize quite quickly especially if u shake around 25-50% colonization

I just recently started using WBS cause rye kicked my ass.

I was told that popcorn is more used as spawn rather than substrate so I went with WBS.

I have had success on 48 quarts of WBS just soaking for 6 - 10 hours, then simmering about 20 minutes.

Best way to keep the kernels from exploding is bring your water to a boil, add the wbs, then lower the heat to a med-low. You dont need a long simmer imo. Also, make sure if it does still boil to be very mild. I have had more success keeping the heat lower and not boiling at all.

When you remove the wbs, you should rinse it extremely well. I then let it sit in a colander for about 45 minutes, load the jars and PC at 15 psi for 90 minutes.

I have not had a jar fail yet! *knock on wood*

As for colonization times, most of my quarts colonized within 9 - 12 days just using a spore syringe.

Good luck!

yeah i think popcorn is better used as spawn. I think i want to try it because, ill be spawning it to some horse poo in an outdoor bed. I think it should work pretty well.

you would be surprised how large a grain of millet(wbs) swells to after a soak (and simmer in my oppinion)
they also have a lot of inoculation points.

have never used popcorn, though, so can't offer an unbiased oppinion.

wbs wins, with 3 wbs and 3 pop corn the wbs colonized fully in 12 days or so the pop corn wasnt even half way there, using lc's
