Amazing colonization /w popcorn!
    #1640199 -

Hey guys, I inoculated some popcorn quart jars 7 days ago (EQ). There was nothing visible on days 1-3, days 4 I missed, and when I looked on day 5 I almost had a fit. It looked like fuzzy cobweb mold *all over* the jars. I almost tossed them out, but wait!!!! Alas, it was in fact mycellium growing. I have grown many times before and have never seen such rapid, even colonization (the jars looked as if they were recovering from a second shake. I shook them all anyway and today (day 7 they look 90% done).

Anyway, I used regular yellow popcorn from the supermarket. Placed all the popcorn in the PC, covered in a couple inches of water, PC'd for an hour, rinsed and drained thoroughly, then loaded into quart jars and PC'd another 90 minutes. 7/7 show amazing coloniztion, no contams.

Just thought I'd add to the growing pool of popcorn-related threads and I hope this helps anyone who may be thinking of the switch. I'll know I'll never use rye grian or wbs again.

It's chicken feed, possibly also pig, horse or cow too, but mistly chicken I think. Farm supply places ought to have it.

I think it's very recommended but not completely required, I've heard of popcorn cakes I think. Use quart jars and case.

There is also WBS with cracked corn in it. A grain to grain transfer colonized in 7 days. It was just cheap WBS and worked great.

It's corn that's been cracked and you buy it at feed stores, pet stores and hardware stores.

Try reading that.

You spawn it onto either straw/poop/compost just like you would with rye or millet.

I'll have to look into the cracked corn.

Yes I plan on casing it with coco fiber after spawning worm castings.

You can do it in half pints, but that kinda ruins the point of popcorn, brf jars colonize so fast that it's not necessary to move to popcorn for that size. You _can_, but for full benefit move to at least quart jars.

Well I'd rather do popcorn 1/2 pints since popcorn is much more available and cheaper around here then verm and brf-so could I just do 1/2 pints and case them after the colonize?

does corn have to be soaked like wbs?  also, will coffee filters suffice for keeping contams outta jars?  also, if a casing has a small spot of green, like dime size, if sprayed often enough with h202 solution, could this perhaps hold off the growth of the mold spores, and possibly save the casing?  oh by the way, a friend wants to know this stuff, not me.  :smirk:  thanks for the help
