WBS Coffin?
    #4375149 -

I followed Doc's WBS Tek and have three quart jars going. Now, I have heard that WBS doesn't like to hold water very well without adding verm to it, which I didn't do :frown:
So my question is could I coffin case WBS to get better results?
Thanks

It is a casing with casing material on bottom, sides, and top.
EDIT: Here's the link.

never heard it called a coffin casing before... but i dont know if you'll get better results that way... Ive gotten great results with WBS with just a bottom and a top layer.

I personally use just WBS with contams being the only issue (from soaking I guess?). Otherwise it does just fine alone.

...but I use 1/2 qt jars. They tend to be easier for me. Faster colonization and less contamination problems. Even if it does get contaminated, you don't lose as much.

Much better then using pints?

You can mix in fully colonized WBS with sterilized moist verm, then incubate it and the verm will colonize and be usefull. Coffin casing would also help hold in moisture of course. Doesnt mean its nessesary or worth the extra work...but who knows. But without the verm mixed into the substrate..you cant really hydrate the grains throughout the casing, just surrounding the casing on the edges..which can work. So can just a top and bottom layer. So can just a top.

Rye is way better to mix into WBS, better then verm even..although both are good. Rye holds water better for fruiting though, and more nutes too I think...fruits better in either case..a mix of all three does the best though (check the link in my sig for more info).

yes. As a matter of fact.....in my last batch, I used pint jars and ended up with contamination in 6 out of 8 jars (after PCing). I have never had such a bad batch w/the 1/2pt jars. I also have had many contamination problems with rye grains and coir. Every time that I have used them, I ended up with green mold.
P.S. I am very cautious about cleanliness and sanitation. I always use a PC and never cut the cook time short. I also incubate my jars in a sanitized tub w/lid, and frequently Lysol. I hope that this helps you out somehow.

I think that millet has more nutes than rye doesnt it scatman? Since WBS is millet based I was always under the assumption that it was more nutritious than rye was...

No, rye fruits much better by itself. I'm not sure if the nutes are that much greater, but the water holding ability of rye is much better. Millet or WBS mixed with verm can give good results but straight WBS vs straight rye and WBS/verm vs rye/verm...rye wins out more of the time. When I'm fruiting I actually like more like 55-60% rye, 25-30% WBS, 10-20% verm...thats a great mix, WBS does have some good seeds in it, like sunflower, to add oils..plus multiple kinds of seeds for varied nutes.

You wouldnt want to survive on one food alone, you need a balanced diet with many vitamins and minerals, much like shroomies...and much like shroomies you cant expect all of them to be contained in one certain food, so a mixture is best.

WBS is used more often then rye, because it makes better spawn. With spawn, nutes dont matter much, neither does water holding ability..you got the poo for both of those..but WBS has many many kernals within a quart so more inoculation points. Plus its easier to find and cheaper. Even with spawn I like putting rye in, I just reverse the ratio from above, and add less verm.

Prior to knocking it up? You can add it to the grain before you load into jars/bags and PC, or you can add it when the substrate is fully colonized and you go to case it. Any time inbetween, youd need to open your sterile jars and add it, which would be a no-no.

I would sure like to see the numbers to prove that rye is better then WBS for fruiting.

IE 1 cup of dry rye grain yielded X amount of dry fruits in 3 flushes.

Show me the numbers.

Not to be an ass, but using that equation wouldn't work because of how many different factors that go into the final yield. I suppose people could come up with yields that completely contradict each other, and they still wouldn't mean much. If you wanted to know what works in your set up, why don't you experiment... it's real fun and you get to eat everything at the end, so you can't lose.

I dont have an exact number, because I did both many times...when I did rye, per quart a good yeild was 30-40 grams. I never got that on WBS, usualy yeild was around 14-20 grams per quart, I got up to 30 and just over on some if they were a nice strain. Side by side many times I get rye:

And I got less from WBS:

But thats just my experience...

ive followed doc's wbs tek before and have better success when i skip the simmering part. simmering releases starches that increase chances for contams and take longer to fully colonize.

That's why I rinse with cold water after simmering--to remove the 'gel-like'(starches)substances that form while simmering.

As far as rye goes-yes it is a better substrate(for straight grain casings)than WBS.You will get better results and yeilds with the rye. But,WBS is cheaper and more easily accessible(Wally-World)than Rye.

Coffin casings?
Just put a sterile layer of verm on the bottom, mist with distilled water until moist, cover with substrate(WBS),add casing layer, mist and fan daily and wah-lah!!!! :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2:

My two cents.

That is very true, per dollar, WBS can grow more shrooms for sure.

Try "over simmering" your WBS. Rinse. Simmer for 2 hours, adding water as needed. Rinse. Drain. Pressure cook. Top and bottom casing layer.  You should close the gap significantly betweeen Rye grain and WBS.

In my opinion and experience the recommendations for simmer times are way to short for WBS.

Do what works for you, of course.
