Possible to be a centrist?
    #3767579 - 02/11/05 04:55 PM (19 years, 1 month ago)

I was wondering if anyone here thinks its actually possible to be a centrist. I had considered myself a centrist, but after much thought realized I definitely leaned more toward the right than the left (I used to lie very far right, and still do on some issues), so I consider myself a right leaning centrist, although I guess I would be better of considering myself a right leaning moderate? Anyway, has anyone ever encountered someone they would truly consider a centrist? I don't think I have personally. The closest thing I can find to centrists seem to be some people on these boards, and I'm guessing that is because a lot of people here are open minded and don't digest the bs fed to them from whatever party.

Maybe for a second, but the center is constantly moving. Also, it depends what crowd you're in. If I was in a room full of Nazis and Communists, I'd be a centrist.

The left-right dichotomy is totally artificial, supported by our two-party system. There is no way to accurately project the diversity of human opinion onto a line (or even a plane, as the "libertarian test" does.)

You can call yourself a centrist or an ubiquitist or any other thing you want, but in the end you're stuck with a choice between Democrat and Republican.

Hard to find middle ground on some issues. War, abortion, taxes, welfare, etc. They are decisive issues, and you can't be half pregnant. I consider myself a realist instead of a centrist. But everyone likes to think that they are the ones with the grasp on reality.

The center of this country has been moving to the right. Compared to the past, this is now a center-right nation. That is the main problem for Democrats. It was a horrible time to run to the left.

But that said, I think the democrats don't even do justice to the left. Even Dick Cheney spoke out about gay marriage and said that "freedom means freedom for everyone" or some such thing (not a direct verbatim quote). Why would it have been so hard for John Kerry to do the same? What was John Kerry's approach to gay marriage? I don't know, I got lost in the "nuance". He certainly never said he was for it, but he also certainly seamed to oppose Bush's opposing it. What? Spit it out.

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid (sp?) are a bunch of fucknuts. Where is the leadership and direction of the party? Those ass clowns have no clue.

When Bill Clinton proposed a budget in 94, Congressional republicans proposed an alternate budget. They had something that they called the "Contract with America", and it won popular support. Whether anyone likes that or not is not really my point. My point is that they have a fucking gameplan. Where is the democrats alternative to Bush's budget today? What is the democratic proposal to save social security? These guys don't have any fucking plans. How do you expect to win support in the battle of ideas when you don't have any fucking ideas. It is polictical suicide.

I want fresh ideas. I want a new democratic party to challenge the republican dominance. If free market philosophy teaches us anything, it is that competition makes us all better. Right now they have no competition. The most prominent member of the democratic party is probably Ted Kennedy. That is a problem. They need to ditch the Kennedys, Kerrys, Pelosis, and Reids. This country is not going to buy into that crap.

I guess they are waiting until the Republicans just fuck everything up, so that then people will have to vote for the alternative. I wish they had a clue what they wanted to do, and could articulate it to the people.

According to an LA Times article I read today the democrats think they need MORE Nancy Pelosis and MORE Howard Dean, They still think that anger, incivility and unreasonable binary opposition and partisanship will make up for the absence of constructive solutions. They bring even more bad karma to our governmental system.

At the same time Bush is asking the Supreme Court to outlaw ayahausca for religious use. I can't even fathom why the government should think that is any of their damn business, or why they would go out of their way to outlaw something that harmless. I guess the policy has been blindly followed for so long that they forgot what the point of it was, accepting that it was sound.

yeah. the democratic party base their actions on that "people will know what is right and wrong" and make a choice based on the facts. yeah we all wished that were true. but most ppl look to their government as leadership to follow and not a tool to be used.
democratic game plan.. teehee. yeah.
and sadly the US is split into dem and rep. and like phi1618  said we only have two choices right now. etc etc [srry for the bad paraphrase, but you said it so nicely  ]
repliblicans expoit this situation to their own benefit and dem wait for the people of the nation to do so for themselves. so until we stand up and fight for what we want it nothing is gonna change.

Out of the official Democrats, I like Dean.

Way better than a Kerry, Clinton, Leiberman...

Most people are afraid of liking him after the media assassin squad did a number on him. The reason for that was from a Hardball interview where he said he would break up the big media conglomerates. Bad Idea. He screamed! He Screamed! Insane! Unelectable! Unelectable! He screamed! Mentally unfit! Unelectable!

Could you elaborate on this a bit? I have no idea what you're talking about.
