I have to agree with Trendal to a degree, though, I see your point. We should know enough to live and let live while sidesteping such obstructions.

Working in such selfish and agressive conditions within society enables one to see without a doubt that these qualities exist in ones mind, within this condtion it becomes impossible to escape and dellude onself therefore it is a perfect condtion for developing spiritual practice and ones own positive growth apart from spirituality.

The only mental condtion that can be destroyed is the ego, hippies who seek to reject our societry do so out of fear, in such actions they never learn, grow, or develop and can get stuck in a childlike condition, never taking responsability for their own minds. Why do you think Hippy communes of the 60's dont exist today?

Wishing to avoid situations which bring to the surface ones own mental agitation, aggression, and dellusion are contrary actions to development. We all know the teenagers infamous line "Leave me alone!". This stems from not wanting to grow up and face reality.

I do not agree that most people have good intentions, if you wish to live in fluffy land Ped then thats your dellusion but nowerdays selfisheness is most definatley the norm.

this is not true or even real,
ego death is a poor term related more to ego dysfunction than death -
hopefully it happens when there is extacy (~not the drug~ maybe) and universal vision,

but in life we have ego

like a rider has a horse. it is neither worth destroying nor worth aspiring to destroy.

There are many realities to chose from. Are we all supose to face the reality of our parents, or media, or church, or government, or our peers?

What if I said that the reality of the world is that we all are supose to stand on our heads, and those who refuse to stand on their heads for at least 2 hours every day are not willing to grow up and face their obligations. Wouldn't it be pointless to try to convince you something like that?

Yeah redgreenvines, i was gonna edit that, but had to go out to get some food. What i meant is that the only mental conditions that can be destroyed are related to the ego.

When i say this i dont mean that we should strive to destory the ego, only that any impermentant mental functions or conditions are impermentant becuase they are related to the ego and are therefore subject to the forces creation and destruction.

Yes i have eaten the food of the gods for quite some time, and am sufficiently nurishoud by there blessings. Thnak you for asking.

Why would you care what how different approaches to spirituality are "seen"? How can that be considered spiritual advancement, to be worried about how OTHER PEOPLE are going to view YOUR approach to your spiritual life?

To each his own.

That's exactly what I was going to reply with. My spiritual teachings teach me to not care about making ego impressions to set myself a part from others as being better then them. That's a huge challenge to overcome in itself if you were not raised that way. It takes a spiritual warrior to overcome its ego needs to feel better then others.

Sinbad, what has your spiritual path yet taught you about being humble and humility? Does humbleness hold any spiritual value for you? It's my understanding that the strongest of warriors speak softly and carry really big sticks.

What does "the meek shall inherit the earth" mean to you if anything?

Why do you think Hippy communes of the 60's dont exist today?

Some do.

To think that all of the world can be changed to live in an idea hippy society is certainly naive, but to want to live in a small self sustaining community is quite feasible.

The only mental condtion that can be destroyed is the ego

Nonsense. The idea of ego death isn't even very real.

hippies who seek to reject our societry do so out of fear, in such actions they never learn, grow, or develop and can get stuck in a childlike condition, never taking responsability for their own minds.

Also nonsense. Some people simply enjoy a difference pace of life, and different lifestyle. Sure, there are hippies who have silly irrational beliefs, but that does not invalidate their entire lifestyle.

Wishing to avoid situations which bring to the surface ones own mental agitation, aggression, and dellusion are contrary actions to development.

Why? Thinking that it is necessary to live in a negative environment to develop as a person is as baseless and ridiculous an idea as any. Living in such an environment may be necessary to learn to function within such an environment, but if you create different conditions, and choose to live within them, then there is absolutely no reason to believe that you will be missing out on a key part of the human experience.

Your ideas seem to stem from the christian philosophy that leisure and pleasure are somehow immoral, and the greater your suffering and misery, the more righteous you are, which is nonsense.

My spiritual masters teachings are related to our real nature. The principle being direct introduction to the nature of mind, and integrating that state in every moment of life.

Of course i have to apply Sutra methods at times, but only as a means to realizing my true condition, in essence my spiritual teaching have taught me not to be condtioned by any experience or teaching. Basically to go beyond dualistic thinking and enter into mind essence directly.

Humbleness and humility are sometimes neccassary for realizing the equality of all beings and has great value, but our true condtion is beyond all distinctions, condtions, and teachings that relate to ego. One can read a book on sutra methods for taiming the mind and practice them quite effectivley, but this is still within a dualistic perpective and a limitation that the practioner must eventually go beyond.

The definition of a spiritual warrior is one that seeks to know the truth and is willing to go through all obsticals to attain that state. What means and methods one employs is enitirely in relation to the capacity of the individual.

Your last statement means nothing to me.

A nice point. In the begining, Jesus was always fond of the suffering because they are the ones that need most of the help, but the church twisted that into thinking you have to suffer to recieve the love of god. But the ultimate goal helping the poor and suffering, which Jesus thaught is to eliminate their pain.
What is immoral in original christian standards is living a life of leisure if those around you are not (meaning you could share it with them), but if you make a society, or a commune in wich it is possible for everyone to just relax and enjoy, there is no need to avoid it.

I agree to an extent that living in a small community is certainly pheasable, and to live at such a peacful pace of life is certainly ones own choice, and i can see the seduction of such a carefree existence.

But how can you discover your limitations if your life is totally carefree? If no one is pushing your buttons you will never discover that you have them. Contrary to popular belief ignorance is not bliss, and their can be no progress, personal or otherwise without challenges to test our limitations and show us our weaknesses which allow us to recognise them and go beyond them.

Their lifestyle is valid in the way that it reflects the fact that all people want happiness and dont want suffering, but its invalid as a spiritual path, in the way that to grow and develop their must be condtions which show us where we are stuck!

Its like were all sinking in quick sand but are ignorant of this fact, the only way we can know about that fact is if some circumstances make us aware of it. If everyone is being nice and peacful and saying that everything is ok, then we are liklely to belive it and go on sinking, but if people are shouting, screaming, telling us to get out, then we wake up and do something. To run away from these wake up calls is not only foolish but dangerous. Pleasure is not immoral just the other side of the coin, of course we can enjoy pleasure but to grow as human beings we have to work with suffering.

I have not been rasied in a christian family, nor have i had many christian infulences in my life other than a decorated tree.

Negativity is absolutley essential as its the basis for all suffering and provides the perfect circumstnces for going beyond such conditions.

reread your sutras -
humility is always necessary
feel free to be disgusted with yourself if this is not working out.(temporarily of course until you get it right)

being mean is not part of the sutras
so the last statement in the clipped quote above is obviously an invention of your defenses

gettingjiggy is onto something WRT this christian approach to spiritual materialism

Humility is neccassary when followinng specificly the sutra teachings, which i do not 'specificly'. But at times when humility is neccassry it can be applied.

The only reason the statement means nothing to me is that i do not understand its meaning, and how it can be applied.

Being facetious never benefited anyone, insert your own terminology if your not comfortable with mine.

As far as spiritual warriors are concerned you obviously don't understand the meaning of being a 'spiritual warrior', essentially it just applies to the quality of extreme perseverance.

What makes you think that the hippy lifestyle isn't without it's own challenges and problems? They might be different than the ones you experience in an office job or something, but they exist. You are missing out on some of the challenges they experience, just as they are missing out on the challenges you experience.

Their lifestyle is valid in the way that it reflects the fact that all people want happiness and dont want suffering, but its invalid as a spiritual path, in the way that to grow and develop their must be condtions which show us where we are stuck!

Spirituality isn't something concrete. If someone decides that leaving a peaceful life is the best way to achieve spiritual goals, there is no way that can be measured against your methods. Like I said in my first response, it's fairy tale vs. fairy tale.

I have not been rasied in a christian family, nor have i had many christian infulences in my life other than a decorated tree.

That's not what I meant. By living in a culture that was founded on those values, you are surrounded by them and they will seep through in all sorts of media.

Pleasure is not immoral just the other side of the coin, of course we can enjoy pleasure but to grow as human beings we have to work with suffering.

And what have you been doing to save us from the "quicksand"? I hear a lot more screaming and shouting to do something from hippies than from 9-to-5ers.

But surely having someone that thinks the same why you do, and at the same time is your teacher and master must give you some confidence.
Same thing can be seen in most children that go to school and learn something fun and interesting. They are ready to bet their life on what they heard in school, because school represents the ultimate truth to them. In reality, school is full of unproven information that changes from year to year.

Granted but thats not how its promoted by these hippies, and its exactly why in most cases it didntnt work, the hippies all expected to live carefree away from society and its troubles, but found that wherever they went in this world they could not escape suffering.

But if by some miracle they did find a place where everyone agreed and shared the same views and lived a carefree existence, what motviation would there be to do any spiritual practice? Why bother if everything is pleasant and fine?

I was using the quicksand analogy as an example of the negativity of modern society and the passivity of a carefree existence, not as a measure of ones ability to help others.
