The not so fresh part about being a hippie...
    #4751689 -

Freaks, outcasts and anti-socialites...

I believe they are all poster children of the hippie movement... like it or not, this type is as much a part of our counter culture as the tree hugger or the vegetarian.

Discuss.

Sure. What's wrong with that? I consider myself a freak, and I have no qualms about it.

the flower-children with youthful idealism twinkling in their eyes have died-out for the most part, along with the hippies that were only in it for the drugs, and the plastics, most of them got back to bending over for the man, while a few of the more die-hard true babylon-despisers became crusty old aging hippies, and they can still be seen around the scene but theyre laying low for the most part

there is still a new-age hippie movement, mostly centered around the internet, along with the rainbow family and concerts like schwagstock, bonaroo, ive met plenty of long-haired like-minded kids on the road, tho not directed like the old days, no one solid source of LSD, no woodstocks, no grateful dead. but we make due with what we got.

as long as we still own our minds, there will always be hippies.

Nor do I, but it seems some hippies are a bit elitist... when it comes to which part of the counterculture they are willing to associate themselves with.

And, if those elitist hippies are in a place of power, they can shun a huge chunk of their society... for the benefit of others.

I've seen it happen time and time again.

Disagreed. I've been to a lot of scenes, to a lot of shows. Hardcore/~punk kids are elitist, you dance the wrong way in the pit, wear the wrong kinda shirt, some ignorant motherfucker will tell you off, and tell you to do things his way, and keep putting you down. Being impared on a drug or on the wrong kind of drug will get you shit. I can wear a fucking space suit to a hippie show/festival screaming about kook conspiracies, and still be accepted in the crowd. Hippies are the most accepting people I've never met. Drug dealers in the hippie crowd can be selective, but they're not in the scene for the idealistic mindset.

I believe thats exactly what happened in the mid-70's with the coke wave. Instead of associating with the magical experience of mind-exploring LSD, they found this new substance that makes you want to tell other people off, not be pushed around like they did for the past decade by authority. They wanted to take charge. But it's hard (in the states) to get voted in a corporate or governmental position unless your views concurr with the party's ... and if your views are already the same, there's really not much you can change. Basically they uberknowst to themselves just broke down like the system wanted them to.

As I said ... I've been to many, many types of shows including punk, hardcore, metal, ska, psy-trance, raves, jam, etc etc. You dont have to be a part of a crowd or part of anything, a 'hippie' to spread the message of individuality. To "think for yourself and question authority", you just have to have the right knowledge and the right mindset.

"Punk aint no religious cult,
Punk is thinking for yourself,
it aint hardcore if you spike your hair,
If a jock still lives inside your head!"

- Jello Biafra, of the Dead Kennedys
While this quote is directed towards punk-rock, it still makes a powerful statement of how following scenes is just like following a trendy fad.

Yeah, I don't mean hippie so much as, "Counterculture" or "Shroomery" or "S&P".

Good points.

I was intentionally vague, but didn't mean to be THAT vague...

""Hippies don't like to take baths!" became a popular cliche and so everyone opposed to personal cleanliness ran away from home and joined us. Whoever originated that rumor was probably speaking for how they themselves would have opted to behave in an atmosphere of freedom. Mechanisms of self-fulfilling prophecy insured that every unseemly trait projected our way by those who feared themselves would become the truth in short order, for Time and Newsweek began to function as recruiting literature. So it was not long before it was no longer hip to be a hippie... I decided it was not the labels so much as our attachment to them that constituted the problem. As the Hip Culture we were used by Madison Avenue to sell fashions. As the Love Generation we became hateful and angry because we saw ourselves as loving and young, and those opposing us as spiteful and old. Perhaps the secret of survival, now that we were being named from the outside anyhow, was to forever create new names and always be ready to let the old ones go." - Kerry Thornley

Honestly, the only group where I see any slight resurgence of hippy idealism would be in Anarcho-Punks. Today "counter culture" has come to be associated with anyone who does drugs it seems. I know plenty of people who are racist, bigoted, and hateful but they consider themselves 'counter cultured' because they smoke pot and listen to rock music. Hippies are neither the original forefathers of peace, love, and tolerance. I believe it began in the 1930's and 1940's when some white people began to assist the civil rights movements for African-Americans and often associated themselves with the pot-laden jazz scenes accross the country. In the 1950's this transformed into the Beat generation which embraced romanticism, wider ideas of tolerance, art and fleeing corporate enslavement. In the 1960's with the intense political climate, the counter culture essentially exploded into conjugation. It gave wider ground to sexual revolution in the 1970's in regard to women's rights and gay rights and more recently in the 80's, 90's, and today, has evolved into various youth cultures that all seem to share the idealism of rejecting conformity as they see it.

Indeed.

I've gone to the Oregon Country Fair the past two years and I'm amazed at the wide diversity of people there.  Yet they all seem to fit within the category of "hippie."
