fuzzy shrooms
    #360819 - 07/25/01 04:48 PM (22 years, 8 months ago)

Greetz everyone/anyone,
I've got a lot of pins going on, they are getting really big. But Why are they so fuzzy? Looks like myc, all over them. It's pretty thick, and on the bigger ones it's even all over the tops and a lot thicker there.

Anyone seen this? Know what it could be?

Thanks, crow13

fuzzy growth on mushrooms and stuff means its too humid... lower humidity down a notch or two... or just leave it alone, i dont think it will hurt anything, hell its mycelia, it makes you trip...

thanks for the speedt reply! I had heard that from somewhere else as well. What a relief. Other than that I've got about 9 sq feet of beautiful pins and they are looking great. I'm surprised at how much faster the process is going than described in the "shroom cultivator". Proves that even newbies can do it well when oyu follow directions and study a lot.

thx again.

hmm... now I've been having the same thing (fuzzy pins/shrooms) and researched many boards on what this means. I've heard about 50% say that it means too much humidity and 50% say too little. Can someone please settle this once and for all? Which is it???

Good question, Product.

I have seen that confusion on many posts. Some of my reading indicates that if there is fuzzy growth more than 1/2 way up the shroom, then your humidity is too low (the mycelia is tring to get moisture from the shroom itself.)

I believe if you have fuzz all over your shrooms, and you think it is mycelial growth, then you need to up your humidity.

Too much humidity and/or not enough fresh air will cause this. This has been my experience.

my humidity is at 95%, there are even droplets of water on one or two of the shrooms. As wells as water fogging up my greenhouse, so I would say too much. And I ahve fuzz all over them.
Great even more contridiction.

9 square feet! Good god. What type of bed/substrate are you using?

Once and for all: That spikey straight mycelia that can appear yellowish at times near the base of the mushroom can come form too much humidity. If normal Mycellium starts to wig out from the to of the shroom then your humidity is too low.

Taken straight from the MMG3.2:

"If the mushrooms have mycelium growing on the caps, it is an indication that your humidity is too low in the terrarium."

I've read it elsewhere, too. Can't say it is correct now that I have heard otherwise from those who seem to be experienced by my reading of their previous posts.

Interesting, From what everyone one is saying my humidity is too low. At the same time there is condensation all over my greenhouse(would suggest high humidity), I have an air exchange system laying on the casing layer. I know air dries stuff out, so could it be a lot less humid on the casing layer than the top of my greenhouse (3-4 ft)? My airxchange is on a 1 hr on 2 hr off cycle. Would lengthening the off times equalize so of this?

It's a straw bed ;)

thoughts?

I just watched a friend of a friend birth some 1/2pint cakes into a bin with perlite. I know for a fact that the hummidity was very low, the lid was very loose and just now had some tape put around it. With in a matter of 4 hours there was a lot of fuzzy hairs coming out of the head on at least one of the bigger pins on the cake.

would make me guess that hairs from the head mean low hummidity.

Stamets says in The Mushroom Cultivator that P. Cubensis has "fuzzy mycelial growth on the fruitbodies." He makes no mention of when, why and under what conditions.

Part of my inexperience cant help lean towards the notion perhaps it's it's not a reliable indicator of ANYTHING?

Whaddya all think of the validity of that?

MMGG has many wrong and misleading information in it. This is one of them.

If it?s too dry, you get cracked, splited caps

anno is spot on (yet again)
mmgg is quite erronous in parts...

sounds like rH is too high... this is not a problem tho.

In my experience the fuzzyness comes from high humidity and stagnant air. But I have never attempted to grow at lower humidity so I can't say if low humidity can cause it as well. I believe it can result from both too high or too low humidity or there may be another factor all together that we are missing. Regardless, it means little more than some extra weight to your crops if all else is going well. :)

Thanks everyone for your replies and time.
I am begining to think that it is'nt much of an indicator of anything as well. I know that my rH is high, and I have it. Others have experienced the same with low rH.

I am thinking it's a sign of vigorus myc.

And yes all is going great! Picked some of my first this morning! First shot at it , and now I'm hooked!
cheers
