Some experiments
    #358025 - 07/20/01 09:31 PM (23 years, 5 months ago)

Hello, everyone...I'm from Mycotopia and looking for a place to share information since our site's down. I have a few experiments going, here they are:

I gathered several bushels of old grey bovine chips in a field. I soaked them in a barrel, crushed them, and innoculated the mass with pfcakes. I have Hawaiians and Treasure Coast mycelium cakes for this.

Straw colonizes like lightening, but these little piles of poop are colonizing even faster. By weight I used about five pounds of manure for each bed, and they are outdoors in the bushes and grass. This weight is more than twice what my grassbeds come to. After a week, colonization is 90% and racing along---even though there are other shrooms already popping up and weeds and grass and bugs and sunlight etc...it's a natural environment, and seems like fruiting will occur in a week.

Also, I have taken my grassbeds and popped them out of their tubs and trays and put them in shallow holes covered with oak leaves and twigs. One outdoor grassbed that has already fruited I dug up, saw that the mycelium was nearly all used up, and grabbed some dry grass stems from their place in the garden where they have been drying in the sun a couple weeks, and rolled it all up with the old mycelium, and put the lot back in its place.

Old Timer has posted pics of his 'superbrick', made with straw and pfcake powder, and he's getting massive fruits and flushes out of it. So I decided to innoculate a plastic bag lined box full of the same cow dung with a few cakes, just mixed it together thoroughly and sealed it up in the box about a foot cubed. Stabbed holes in it all around. Colonization should take a week.

I realize this is not advanced cultivation, because I have had success with similar methods and I'm sure others have, too. But the use of pure dung is new to me, and I thought some folks might be interested in what I'm doing here. Eventually I will take ten pfcakes and innoculate a cubic yard of material and see what happens in a bed a foot deep. My theory is that the larger the mycelial mass or colony, the larger the fruits.

We'll see, but in the meantime, is anyone else here growing cubies in pure dung? Any other outdoor cultivation success stories?

Welcome to the Shroomery!
I never grew cubensis outdoors, but what you do seems interesting. I might try something like this too.

Hello Brother Lichen!

What do you think of mixing straw and worm castings, or cow poop. 50/50 should work pretty well, and it sounds like you have plenty of both in your neighborhood.
