Makeshift pressure cooker

Is there a way to sorta create a makeshift pressure cooker? Like, apply some rubber or cork to make a good seal between a pot's body and lid, and then maybe place some kind of weight on the lid, to prevent steam or pressure from escaping until the desired pressure is reached. Would this work?

I'm not sure that would be a good idea! Have you ever seen what an exploded pressure cooker can do?(One that is designed for that purpose mind you!) For one thing there wouldn't be a sliding safety lock. Secondly, there would be no idea to tell what kind of pressure you have going on in there. Nope, not something to mess around with in my opinion. My advice would be to check out your local thrift shops..dime a dozen my friend...cheap as hell, too!

Well if you had a meter to tell you the psi inside of the pot attached to the lid it would be possible to tel the pressure indide. But, this would be a pain in the ass to construct and then it probably wouldn't even work. Plus, you would not be able to tell how much pressure the pot could withstand and likely it wouldn't be enough to serve any real purpose in sterilization. So, to answer your question, I would say it is a very bad idea to even try. I like explosions, but when it includes flying metal I prefer to not be in the area.

Yes, actually I have seen the damage. I wasn't really gonna try it, but I was interested. The pressure inside the pots would be determined by the weight on the lid of course. The lid would essentially act as one huge valve. If a heavy duty pot was used (I have seen some huuuge thick heavy cast iron pots), I dont see why it wouldnt work. And even if you couldnt get the pressure up to about 10-15psi, at least the pressure would still be higher than normal.

Don't mess with high heat pressure.. you could level your entire kitchen... Id rather spend the extra 30 & or so and get a REAL pressure cooker.. rather than spend a couple hundred trying to plaster that hole in the wall when your makeshift pot explodes
