Brown Rice as a Substrate
    #3485438 - 12/12/04 10:00 AM (12 years, 21 hours ago)

Hello

The golden PF tek with its brown rice flour.
But then I only see ONE Tek with whole Rice as a substrate. It is not in the TEK section but in the substrate part of the cultivation forum.

Q: What are good methods for using Rice as a substrate?

Or should i just see it as ryeor wbs or...., soak 12-20 hours, simmer, rinse drain, jars, PC, cool, inoc??

Thanks

Try the 9er tek, it looks like what you are asking for.
Im trying it using 50%water/50%coffee to hydrate the rice before I cook it.

The 9er tek is in the advanced cultivation teks I believe. This pic should give you an idea of how it turns out, substrate wise.

I've heard that adding yeast can help the cakes by giving them a few extra nutrients. is there anything else i can add to my pf cakes to give them more nutrients, make them more healthy, and/or increase yield? I would just move up to a different susbstrate, but i don't have a pc so i have to stay with brf for now as it's supposedly the only substrate that can be sterilized without it.

I find it weird that there is so little info about rice as a substrate, just like Rye or WBS.

Any reason for that?

Yeah without PC grains etc are a nono. At least so they say......

Quinoa will make your fruits more potent according to the Alien substrate
You can get it from a health food store

I havent tried doing the 9er tek yet but Im gonna try it very soon..
Instead of going by the tek 100% im gonna innucalate with a spore syringe and use 1/2 pint glasses, hope it works

Ah but is there any veteran out there who can commit to this about rrice as a substrate:

"Just treat rice as you would treat Rye."

Thanks.

hey i just got an idea. they say you absolutely must use a pc to sterilize grain cuz using boiling water won't work like it would with brf. why doesn't it work? i'm guessing it must be because there are bacteria or contaminants or whatever in the grain that aren't in brf, and these specific contaminants won't be killed in a pot of boiling water cuz it won't get hot enough, is that right? so if that's true, couldn't you just sterilize the grains in your oven at whatever temp. you need, and then make your grain jars like normal and then boil them in a pot of water without using a pc???

No, since you can't. Rice is sticky and can not be used the same way as rye.

Anno!!!
Hey bud I havn't seen you in a while. It's been almost 4 yrs. i think. New acount, and per. comp., and a whole new itch for some shrooms once again. BTW...thx for the EQ print awhile back:)
Nice to see a familar face again. If Shroomage would only come back now
Anyway I landed on this little thread. I was surprised at the title really, " Brown R as sub?" I scratched my head for a moment and thought.....there must be awhole new generation of growers:)
I'm not sure what other TEK's are callin for these days but, good old uncle ben's long grain brown rice, with some flax seed, and finch seed in a 1/2pt. jar was all that was needed. The right combination produced an abundent amount of flushes.
At least all the strains of P. cubies that I've worked with in the past loved the stuff. I was able to have 1/2 pt's. colonized in about 8-9 days. Of course I've never worked without a coffee grinder, and a P. Cooker. Also casing...cakes were usless(no offence to anyone).
I thought what shroomage was teaching me was sound information. It's never failed, and takes well to a dung casing mix.
Maybe I misunderstood the ?. I apologize if that is the case?
I really just stopped by to see who stands by their product these days. I'm in need of spore's.
Oh well...nice to see the changes at Shroomery:)

Yow thanks Anno!
