Brown rice substrate
    #904159 - 09/24/02 11:15 AM (14 years, 9 months ago)

Couldn't find brown rice flower last weekend so went with Organic whole wheat flour. Will this still work? If not, what is it in rice flower that makes it so good?

Thanks

I'm not sure, but I wouldn't try it. Go to your grocery store and buy Brown rice, any brand. You'll need a coffee grinder. Or you can go to a larger health food store to find the BRF. It will cost you, though.

You can go get organic or whole brown rice.....then grind it up.

When I was making PF cakes I used a coffee burr grinder.

Making your own brown rice flour is alot cheaper.

good luck!

I bought BRF and it was like $2.50 for 2 pounds. Any organic food store should have it.

No myco

I have retired from using BRF cakes.

I mainly only use Rye grain now....my preference.
So I'm using Rye grain inoculated with agar wedges.
I'm loving agar work!!

I'm experimenting with a few things too.
AFOAF sent me a new Tek to try out.....so you might see a new grow log out of me soon.

Roadkill has at least one completed grow log in the archives. I've read a bunch of them. SWIM get's his natural organic brown rice from the local grocery store. Roar. He also uses a small Mr. coffee grinder to get a nice cornmeal consistency, he finds the coarser "rice-meal" increases rizamorphic growth. He currently has 11 B+ jars, 11 PES Hawaiin and soon to be 22 Mazatapec jars going. Not 1 has been lost to contamination yet. He has staged them by weeks so he'll get a nice constant yield for a few months. Has used 2 different substrate recepies and will be casing half and fruiting the others PF style. I will post his results in a grow log after his first flush. BTW this is his first grow. Wish him luck.

[Edit] He has also found that a homemade incubator, @20$, set at 82 degrees has cut the growing time of the mycelium in half. He plans on staging things so he doesn't have more than 6 fruiting chambers running at a time so he keeps half the jars out of the incubator and rotates them in as it's time to birth or case jars that are ready.

Peace.

If you grow them, they will come.
