Einstein wasn't too thrilled with the government for making the A-bomb with his theories. He once said that if he had known the outcome he would never have published relativity. Deff is correct in saying he was a pacifist. If you want to read a good book that gives insight to Einstein as a human read "The World as I see It" by Albert Einstein

"War seems to me a mean, contemptible thing: I would rather be hacked in pieces than take part in such an abominable business. And yet so high, in spite of everything, is my opinion of the human race that I believe this bogey would have disappeared long ago, had sound sense of the nations not been systematically corrupted by commercial and political interest acting through the schools and the press."
Albert Einstein

A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

I beleive he was a pacifist too. His relationship with our Government was not black and white.

If you can ever get your hands on that book, it won't dissapoint.

"He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, scince for him the spinal cord would fully suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, senseless brutality, deplorable love-of-country stance, how violently I hate all this, how despiceable an ignoreable war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action! It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder." -- Albert Einstein

Sounds like we need Albert to lead a protest march or two against the war in Iraq.

Too bad he remains "stubbornly and persistently dead."

A body ages in time.
Einstein was born and died.
Therefore time must exist.

hmmm, the einstein who manifested himself in a dimension limited by time died yes. but i might be inclinced to believe that the energy that made einstein is quite eternal. i don't think most of us here can grasp the entirety of what einstein discovered.

True, while one can accelerate one's forward travel in time by traveling at near light speeds going back is impossible.

Albert Einstein

Instead of taking an absolutely literal and face value interpetation of this quote, as I personally do not condone doing so as the only method of analyzing other's words, I would venture to consider that Einstein was speaking in the context of a human being's experience of the distinction between past, present, and future, on the level of one's in the moment state of being.

The passage of mechanical, universal time, as I see it, will ever continue to lead itself through our physical universe, the constant state of change in all objects flowing along with this. However, time as we experience it is relative to no objective thing. It is always in relation to actions, other objects, states of change... doesn't this seem to be a pillar in Einstein's thought? With no "outside" variable with which we can compare our motion to, no motion exists, to us. The same principle applies equally well to the passage of time.

But this isn't the direct point, merely an intriuging, related sidenote. The direct point is the thought of our own experience of each moment. The point is our state of being. The illusion of past and future seperate us from and create a further illusion out of our present. This does not exclude the importance of the past and what will come to be in the future, this involves how the memories from the past and the imaginations of the future effect our here and now experience.

After all, what point in time are we not living in the present? There isn't one. What point in time are we living in the present, completely conscious and spaciously aware of our living in the present? That depends on ourselves and how strong and present the stubbornly persistent illusion of past, present, and future that Einstein spoke of is.

I feel relatively () comfortable in at least considering that Einstein could have had this meaning in mind when he spoke the quoted text, noting his speciality in the theory of relatively and his fondness of what he so beautifully called cosmic religions, such as Buddhism, that have these ideas present in their teachings. Einstein rules!

>> Sequential events are temporally displaced and hence, distinct.

How can the present moment exist without the past? The vast and complex workings of every facet of the present moment, the innumerable changes occuing in all the universe's objects and in all it's features of space: do any of these occur independently of the previous moment of existence? Of course they do not. Every moment of existence is dependent upon the previous moment of existence. Because they function in dependence upon eachother, they are the same entity and are therefore not distinct.

The material world resembles a growing plant in this way. Each new leaf or "event" depends on the energy supplied by previous leaves or "events" in order to maintain it's momentum. The entire entity is sustained on a stalk and on roots, which are "past events" in terms of a plant's lifecycle. If changes are made to the stalk or roots, they affect the appearance of the entire plant. Nobody would think it's correct to suggest that a plant is distinct from it's leaves, stalk and roots. Why is it correct to suggest that the present moment is distinct from it's features, it's past features, and it's future changes?

Without a present moment, the concept of "future" does not even make sense. The events of the present moment are what shape the future. All the multitudes of changes in our environment are what will sustain the most gross and the most subtle events of the future. If there were no past, there would be no present, and if there were no present, there would be no future and no time at all. The three function as unified parts of a singular entity, "time", and are therefore not distinct.

I believe Albert Einstein said it best:

"The distinction between past, present, and future
is only a stubbornly persistent illusion."

Well, I find it odd that people would call Einstein a hero, or the greatest scientist of all time.

He presented some amazing and revolutionary ideas, but there are others, who are less recognized, and who did a better job.

For instance, Einstein completely disregarded quantum mechanics, claiming "God does not play dice", even in the face of some pretty damn convcincing, and elegant mathematics. If that's not an example of letting a preconceived notion cloud your ability to consider new ideas, I don't know what is.

He was a good scientist, but he's really become more of a pop star than anything.

That notion is taking hold with scientists now. Quantum theory is losing ground.

Heh, well I guess that depends on the observer.

Anyways, I think "quantum physics" is a very strange science and I will admit that I am no expert although I use quantum theories everyday in my work.  The best way to describe quantum physics is that it is where we are at scientifically and this is the current level at which we can conduct physical experiments.  It's name is misleading because it is nowhere near a universal or "true" theory of the universe.
