Einstein's Riddle
    #2756311 - 06/02/04 11:50 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

ALBERT EINSTEIN'S RIDDLE

ARE YOU IN THE TOP 2% OF INTELLIGENT PEOPLE IN THE WORLD?
SOLVE THE RIDDLE AND FIND OUT.

There are no tricks, just pure logic, so good luck and don't give up.

1. In a street there are five houses, painted five different colours.
2. In each house lives a person of different nationality
3. These five homeowners each drink a different kind of beverage, smoke
different brand of cigar and keep a different pet.

THE QUESTION: WHO OWNS THE FISH?

HINTS

1. The Brit lives in a red house.
2. The Swede keeps dogs as pets.
3. The Dane drinks tea.
4. The Green house is on the left of the White house.
5. The owner of the Green house drinks coffee.
6. The person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds.
7. The owner of the Yellow house smokes Dunhill.
8. The man living in the centre house drinks milk.
9. The Norwegian lives in the first house.
10. The man who smokes Blends lives next to the one who keeps cats.
11. The man who keeps horses lives next to the man who smokes Dunhill.
12. The man who smokes Blue Master drinks beer.
13. The German smokes Prince.
14. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house.
15. The man who smokes Blends has a neighbour who drinks water.

ALBERT EINSTEIN WROTE THIS RIDDLE EARLY DURING THE 19th CENTURY. HE
SAID THAT 98% OF THE WORLD POPULATION WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO SOLVE IT.

one more thing:

anyone can look up the answer online
but only someone who truely understands the question can explain why the answer's correct

For clarification, which is the "first house"? Does that mean from the left or from the right?

hehe this will take time....

make a table and follow along

first you need to establish where the houses are since some of the questions rely on that.

so a table would look like...

        color:    Nationality:    Smoke:  Beverage:  Pet:
house 1
house 2
house 3
house 4
house 5

let's find the order of the houses via the color

first look at hint 9...it says the norweigan lives in the first house.  so put that in the table.

now look at hint 14...it says the norway guy lives next to the blue house...so you know the blue house is the second house.

now look at hints 4...5...and 8 time to use logic here.

4 says the green is to the left of the white house, well this excludes houses 1 and 2 off the bat because the in order for the green house to be the first house, the second house must be white, which we know is blue instead.

5 says the owner of the green house drinks coffee and 8 says the center house drinks milk.  well green can't be house 1 or two, and it cant be house three (the center house) because green drinks coffee while the center drinks milk.  since 4 says green house is to the LEFT, of white, then we have no choice but to have green as house 4 and white as house five.

now we know the norweigen is in the first house and hint 1 says the brit lives in the red house, so the first house cannot be red, it is therefore the third house, making the first house yellow

so here's the order of the colors

yellow
blue
red
green
white

not put in somemore information, hint 7 says the yellow house smoked dunhill, so put that in.

hint 11 says The man who keeps horses lives next to the man who smokes Dunhill, so the second house has horses

hint 15 says

"The man who smokes Blends has a neighbour who drinks water."

as neighbor who drinks water...this means that it can't be house five since house five's only neighbor drinks coffee.  this means it's either house one or two.  but since we already know house 1 smokes dunhill, therefor the second house smokes blends

since the man who smokes blends lives near a guy who drinks water, then that leaves either house 1 or 2 that drinks water, but it isn't house 2 obviously since house two (goven by the hint) lives next to a person who drinks water.  therefore house 1 drinks water

hint 12 has two pieces of information. The man who smokes Blue Master drinks beer.  we know it can't be house 1 3 or 4 since those houses drink something other than beer. so we are left with houses 2, and 5.  smoking blue master eliminates house 1 and 2 since we know they smoke something else.  therfore house 5 smokes blue master and drinks beer.

3. The Dane drinks tea.

the only beverage left is tea, and the only house for that to fit into is house 2.  so house 2 has a dane living there and drinks tea.

13. The German smokes Prince.  since we know since house 1 2 and 5 smoke dunhill blends and blue masters respectively, this leaves us only with houses 3 and 4.  but we know from the hint before that the brit lives red house, and we figured out that the red house is number 3, so house four has a german man who smokes prince.

this means we are only left with pall mall for house 3 since it's the only house without smoke to be labeled, and we know the 5th house has a swede in it since it's the only house without a nationality labeled.

2. The Swede keeps dogs as pets.

so house 5 has dogs

6. The person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds.

so house 3 has birds

10. The man who smokes Blends lives next to the one who keeps cats.

so since the man who smokes blends is in house 2 then either house one or 3 has cats, since they are it's only neighbors.  but we already know that house 3 has birds, therfore house 1 has cats.

therefore house 4 has the fish...it's the GERMAN!!!!!

damn nazi's!!!

It isn't really hard, just a time-consuming process of elimination. I'd be impressed by anyone who could figure it out without writing anything down on paper...

really you can figure this out by using differential equations and summations as well

cognitive studies have shown that anyone can perform tasks like these. The people who solved them in the shortest amount of time were the ones that used matrices.

I think I found it.It must be the first house(green) with the German who drinks coffee and smokes prince. But I made an assumption which if said could be a spoiler if I am correct. Come on tell me!!!!

Actually it sepends on how you draw it. The first house could also be the last house and also where it says the that the green house is on the left of the white one, it depends on the direction that you will take so you could then have the green house to be the 4th or the 2nd.

"BTW, does anyone else read this and get a scary mental image of an entire nation's tax and credit records being fed into massively parallel quantum computer to find out who's got the 'fish', locate them, profile them, and conclusively prove their guilt all in a matter of nanoseconds? "

haha, well for arguments sake dude, I read from left to right, top to bottom, so the left house, or the top hous, is the first one :P

It doesn't matter...dude.... when you get to solve it you will see what I mean. You have two major options first in which to use the hint with the green and the white house you have to make it each time different depending if your yellow is drawn at end right or end left. Although it doesn't affect in no way the final result.

Here's the order I came up with (houses ordered right to left):

Norsk (yellow) (cats) (water) (dunhill)
Dane (blue) (horses) (tea) (blends)
Brit (red) (birds) (milk) (pall mall)
Swede (white) (dogs) (beer) (blue master)
German (green) (fish) (cofee) (Prince)

So, the german keeps the fish.

Follow along with the list:
1. The Brit lives in a red house. CHECK
2. The Swede keeps dogs as pets. CHECK
3. The Dane drinks tea. CHECK
4. The Green house is on the left of the White house. CHECK
5. The owner of the Green house drinks coffee. CHECK
6. The person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds. CHECK
7. The owner of the Yellow house smokes Dunhill. CHECK
8. The man living in the centre house drinks milk. CHECK
9. The Norwegian lives in the first house. CHECK
10. The man who smokes Blends lives next to the one who keeps cats. CHECK
11. The man who keeps horses lives next to the man who smokes Dunhill. CHECK
12. The man who smokes Blue Master drinks beer. CHECK
13. The German smokes Prince. CHECK
14. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house. CHECK
15. The man who smokes Blends has a neighbour who drinks water. CHECK
