I knew this America bashing nonsense would be here. White Americans are above average and the black and hispanic kids are below average. Let's send the black people and hispanics back where they came from. Also, drugs lower your scores, too.

Asian Americans are, on average, a good deal better than their white counterparts. Perhaps the white man should head back to Europe?

If education benefits the student, shouldn't the student pay for his own education?

in an ideal world, they would. there'd also be no government.

there must be a certain amount of democracy and there is no effective way to completely secure individual rights from its power. if the majority is large enough, right or wrong, they are going to have their way. there is no way to avoid this. it's a pitfall of democracy, but we still must have democracy because in most circumstances it's a greater protector of liberty than destroyer.

you will not become elected in this country if you make it clear that you would be willing to abolish public education if made able.

How is a child going to pay for his own education? If his/her parents cannot pay for the education should the child be penalized by a lack of proper education?

I know the way I was taught math was absolutely ridiculous. We need to focus on theorems and equation derivation if you want kids to get a solid foundation. In my 12 years of grade schoo, we were taught endlessly of division, subtraction... just the busy work. When you are taught math in college, you need a concrete base of math rooted in your mind. Let the calculators do the busywork.

they had forced integration when i went to school. they bused me from the suburbs to the inner city. (Miami) i had no time for learning, this white-boy was just trying to survive.

My aunt was put into a forced integration school in the inner city. Shortly afterwards, her good friend was killed by a black girl in the bathroom at the school.

HAHA!  I know exactly what you mean.  I took basic classes all through high school.  So, all of my math classes revisited the same concepts over and over again.  We were still doing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in senior high.  In 11th grade, I distinctly remember spending a large amount of time on fractions.  FRACTIONS!!!  We learned how to do those in second grade!  The most difficult thing we did on the "basic math" track was word problems.

If you go to the store with $5.98 and spend $3.28, how much do you have left?

College was a rude awakening.  I learned algebra, geometry, trigonometry, some calculus, and some physics all within the first year.  It was rough getting caught up in such a short amount of time.

What the hell kind of public schools did you attend? In my junior year I was in AP English (surprisingly enough I did very well back then) and pre-Calculus. Would have been Calculus but I received a "C" the year earlier so I was fortunately held back to pre-Calculus. I even took Latin as my foreign language my sophomore year. All of that was in a public school, so as I said earlier what crappy shitholes did you attend?

my high school had math including advanced algebra, trig, and college-level calculus. it was still a joke of a school.

All of those advanced classes were offered, but they were not required. Many people took the easy way and took Basic Math classes.

Who would have thought...the smaller your penis is, the better your math skills are.  Just to let you guys know, my math skills are barely at a third grade level.

i'd imagine that taking only basic math in high school would put you in a pretty bad position when it came to taking the math section of the SAT.

Look at my penis hypothesis above.  Shit, I barely understand what 2 + 2 means  :smirk:

But seriously...I took the ACT.  I did very poorly on the math part.  I still managed to get into college.  I was forced to learn a bunch of shit on my own.  I got caught up and was solving equations with the best of them after a couple of semesters.

Hmm... but Finland, a social-democratic country with huge taxes supporting public schools, topped the list

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/4073753.stm

I definitely concede that there are many different factors to take into account - but if you claim that private education is always better than public education, then how do you explain Finland coming out number 1?

I didn't say private education was always better than public education in every situation. But in America it seems to be that way.

Is there a country without public education on that list? Definitely a ton of factors to take into account though. The 'l'ibertarian position on education is a very reasonable one I think. The federal government should get the hell out of it. The states can do whatever they want per their constitutions but it is both egregiously illegal and obscenely inefficient for the federal government to have any dealings in the education of our children. Does anyone here disagree with that?

where I live, there are no secular private schools. So the private school kids get a healthy dose of religious indoctrination along with their education, which is almost as bad (if not worse) than the shoddy public education I recieved.

Do you believe it stands to reason that this situation (only religious-based private schools) would change pretty dramatically were the public schools in the area to close down? Also, why do you believe the religious based schools are doing a poor job educating? Just because you disagree with the religious aspect of what is taught?

I think the religious private schools are a good example of the fact that the whole public vs private education debate is lose-lose.

Public schools are going to teach kids in a way that benefits the government's interests. Private schools are going to teach kids in a way that serves private interests. Neither option seems very appealing to me.

It seems that the only way to get an education that serves the individual's interest is if the individual uses his own initiative to go out and educate himself in the manner he deems fit. That's why I used to skip school and go to the library. I was really too much of a geek for school. But to those who follow this path: beware of the thought police who might try to have you vaporized.

the public school that i attended had advanced math-science, (for a few % of kids) who were advanced for their AGE......

the rest of us got leftovers. i had a science teacher who would record his first (leftover) class on a tape recorder, and we would have to listen to his recording machine.
