Should Americans travel abroad more?
    #3301100 - 10/31/04 03:28 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Are you as a non-American willing to pay more taxes to subsidize Americans travelling overseas?

Why not? We're not made of money you know.

Give me my free vacation or shut up.

well, i think that americans (and american companies) should take a cue from their european counterparts, and realize that working oneself to the bone isn't going to make you any happier - and that taking a much deserved vacation every so often might actually increase work productivity (you know - a happy worker is a good worker...)

but no, why would anybody else help subsidize this travel? (except maybe the us govt, by perhaps creating a living wage standard that would allow working-class families this opportunity...)

Isn't the problem that terrorist attacks have put water between americans legs when it comes to flying anywhere?

That, and the current ecconomy restricts international travel for most middle-class Americans.

I don't think I could get my family to take an international flight. Another issue is as someone already said we aren't making the same money we were making a few years ago.

Not really. It just costs a shitload. Alot of Europeans live walking distance from another country. You can't drive to Europe from here. If you could I would consider it.

I could, and have driven to Mexico, but I wouldn't want to go too far into Mexican territory. Those people are crazy.

I'd like to drive to Canada and stay there for a few months some time in the next few years. It would take me about 3 days to get to Vancouver by Greyhound bus, but I could probably get there for less than $300. For that matter, I could probably take a plane and be there in 24 hours for about the same.

Greyhounds are pretty cheap usually. Plan a few months in advance and get the ticket under 50$ for sure.

totally, booking ahead with busses saves a LOT of money.

why should other countries pay for american travel?  a lot of people i've talked to jsut think, bring money and fuck off.  i agree, not just american...probably germans too   the less time people are here and the more money the better.  except for teh cool ones.  maybe they should do an ass hole check at the border...

Not really. It just costs a shitload.

I don't think Bruce Willis is that short of money. He still pulled out of flying to Europe in fear of terrorist attack.

Well I live in New Zealand and being a uni student come across quite a few American exchange students. Most of them are pretty chill, and like to smoke the herb.
One of the interesting things I found was how easy it is to spot an American based soley on appearance and body language. Its like when people speak of a 'gaydar', I beleive in the sense of an 'Americandar'. A few instant giveaways are wide necked drink bottles with some tape wrapped around them, 'Teva' sandals or shoes, some kind of 'Khatmandu' or similar style polar fleece type thing, etc etc. And in combination with this I've noticed most of them are very well groomed even the dread locked hippie chicks still seem very clean and groomed.
Anyway all this is just rambling, not really a relevant to this topic sorry just an observation.
But what is semi relevant is upon talking to American students I've noticed two main kind of attitudes that arise. There are the ones who can see the American situation from a more global oriented perspective and they realise how fucked up the place is and seem to want to try to avoid being there as much as possible. Then theres the type who are so ingrained into the American mindset that they cannot see from outside that perspective, and going overseas makes them become more patriotic and they can sit around going on about how much better the states is than wherever they are. These ones are anxious to return home to the safety of their smoothed off systematic lifestyles.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that an overseas experience could have positive effects on and American by opening their perspectives up, though it can also result in them becoming yet more ingrained into the US patriotic idealism.

And no I don't see why the hell anyone else would pay to have americans come to their country, I think that the US is in a way in the 'global doghouse' at the moment, they definatley aren't gonna get any pampering from other countries that have already been fucked over enough by the 'global superpower'. Besides, most countries already buy enough oil, coca-cola, mcdonalds, and TV shows / movies off america that if anything they should be giving us free holidays!
