Ego-loss=?

I know this is probably a stupid "newbie" question, but I've heard alot of "ego, and ego-loss" references, and I was wondering what they meant, any help?

And the angel of the lord came unto me, snatching me up from my place of slumber. And took me on high, and higher still until we moved to the spaces betwixt the air itself...

leary et al stressed "ego loss" quite a bit in their trip-manual derived from the bardo thodol...
alan watts gets into the "who am i, really?" question in several of his books, both psychedelic and more generally philosphical (e.g. _ the book: on the taboo against knowing who you really are_, _the joyous cosmology_, _cloud-hidden, whereabouts unknown_, etc....)
and much of buddhism and some of hinduism (and also somewhere within most major paths, including christianity, judaism, islam, taoism) is aimed at discovering how to "wake up" from the illusion that we are little bags of skin, totally seperate from a cold, cruel world "out there" and from each other...
if you hop to the fane, they have a lovely links page, and several useful webrings for trying to harvest some words about self & not-self (for whatever words are worth---but then again, words are all that most of us have --- well, works and witness, and buddha's flower sermon ("a special transmission, outside the scriptures")... but, here we are & there we go again... hello... goodbye...)
