Ego Death and Ego Loss
    #6435431 -

Am I correct in thinking that mostly everybody goes through an Ego Death before experiencing an Ego loss?

For me, it took twenty trips before I experienced an Ego Death. My next immediate trip after my Ego Death one turned out to be another Ego Death trip. However, I was able to convert the Ego Death into an Ego Loss during the trip. After this trip, I had some mediocre psychedelic experiences. After these trips, I finally achieved a complete ego loss during my next trip.

It seems to me as if it would be very difficult to achieve an Ego Loss before an Ego Death. Only a very strong willed and satisfied person would probably be able to do this if it's even possible.

So, has anybody done this?

I dont know the difference between the two? I mean, I dont know how many ways you can lose your ego, its there or its not. Whats the difference in your eyes?

Its funny, I always looked at them as the same thing. I prefer the term ego-loss because there are varying degrees of loosing the ego. It doesnt all of a sudden just disappear, it sort of dissolves. There are different depths to it.

If I took your approach I would think ego death would be more of an extreem term to use. In that case it would be the endth degree, unlike your way of looking at it in which the endth degree would be considered ego-loss...

Yeah, it just sort of dissapears as you say, it happened once to me, and it was slightly gradual but there was a definitive moment when I realized that "I" was gone, it was hard to deal with but amazing at the same time.

I think you might mean the same thing with the two terms. Someone who has never experience this sort of thing and is unfamiliar with general psych might think that the term "ego death" means that you lose your ego and never regain it. Death, I guess would be ego death.

Yeah generally i conceive the idea of ego-death to be actual death, although near-death experiences in cases where a body is revived after an accident for instance could perhaps also be considered to be a death of the ego.

Ego-loss is really more a loss of attachment and desire, with varying degrees of depth of course. Mushrooms can cause it, LSD, trance, meditation, dance, Zen, the options are plenty. :mushroom2:

Ego death, hit me like a tank. And I kept eatting more and more mushrooms. It brought upon an eerie side to reality. I really don't see it as enlightening. Can anyone please explain how it is?

Ego death, also brought upon this fuzzy feel of reality. I became convinced I could change reality if I truly believed it. Well, that failed me, then every day I'd wake up (literally like right when I would wake up), with philosphical questioning of reality. What is this. Why am I in this house, what is me, what is this body, what is friendship, what is love, what is anything? ect ect.

For a while I would think I'm actually in hell, and society and humans are all insane like me. Or so I was thinking. And I would think that we all knew the truth "that we were in hell" and used day to day life to distract us from it. We'd use material possesions and anything else to distract us.

I don't know about you guys, but my life went to shit when I experienced ego death.

I've been reading about everything who's gone through ego death and then a rebirth. What exactly is the "rebirth".  I don't believe I experienced one at all. The first time I went through it I passed out I believe. The second time I was too freaked out to really let it take control.  The only thing I got out of this whole experience is the amazing feeling to be alive and well. Would that be considered the rebirth process?

Ego Death and Ego Loss vs. Ego transcendence?

I too had always thought that an ego loss and an ego death were the same thing. That was until this thread was brought to my attention.

This explains the difference between an ego loss and an ego death very well. Thanks Wiccan Seeker and Kaniz.

This experience of ego death seems to entail an instant merciless destruction of all previous reference points in the life of the individual.

That is ego death, and its ten times more horrible than it sounds. It is the worst ordeal you can possibly face. The subsequent rebirth however, is one where you are changed forever

STRONG trips, where the sense of self/time/identiy/reality/body/etc simply cease to exist. There is a conciousness, but there is no "I" to it - simply being. Just pureness. Its hard to fully define, as I mostly remeber the point leading upto it, and the point directly after it - but the actual 'loss' itself is pretty much impossible to remeber except a sensation of being home, pureness and love.
.
I dont have a concept of self, or time, or body, or anything - just simply 'there'. There is no I to my thoughts, there is no body, and I am actually alarmed once the sense of identiy returns "Oh, I'm a me? wow - thats odd. Whered that come from? oh, whats this weird feeling I'm starting to form? oh, thats my body laying on my bed' as I start to re-form into reality.
.
But, I've never felt afraid, or scared, or terror, I can sense it comming, I accept that its comming, I relax and let go - and have always enjoyed the expierence.

This is ego loss.

The difference is that with Ego loss you are so at peace that your ego falls asleep like a baby whereas with Ego death your Ego is chased through a field of broken glass by a gang of psychopath gremlins who will catch him and bludgeon it into a bloody pulp with claw hammers.

Ego Death is one single phase that can easily span twenty or thirty trips with uniquely horrible features. Once you had it to its fullest it will never return. Ever. Ego Loss can happen at any time in a trip.

I'm scared shitless of Ego Death, having been through several sequelae and knowing there will be many more.

i believe it can.

remember that fundamentally, birth and death are only relatives: one cannot exist without the other and the other cannot exist without the one.

if you feel that you are undergoing a process of dying then, when you sense that all is well again, you are back in the process of living.

same goes for something so simple as waking up and going to sleep at night.

you die and are born every single day, in your very own bed. :mushroom2:

but we forget this sometimes, for our minds are always turning and spinning, trying to catch the next bus or train, always living for the future.

there are two meditations you can do that can help you tremendously.

First, in the night before you go to sleep, do this fifteen minute meditation. It is a death meditation. Lie down and relax your body. Just feel like dying and that you cannot move your body because you are dead. Create the feeling that you are disappearing from the body. Immerse yourself totally. Eventually you shall fall asleep.

Next, in the morning, the moment you feel you are awake - don't open your eyes - do the life mediation. Feel that you are becoming more wholly alive, that life is coming back and the whole body is full of vitality and energy. Start moving, swaying in the bed with eyes closed. Just feel that life is flowing in you. Feel that the body has a great flowing energy - just the opposite of the death meditation. With the life meditation you cant take deep breaths. Just feel very happy and alive. Then after fifteen minutes, get up.

Over about a week of doing these meditations one can become more aware and accepting of the basic subtleties of living and dying which happen every day, every hour, every minute, and every split and nano second.

Ego Death and Ego Loss are the same thing. Well according to Timothy Leary they are, and he was a great researcher on it. I'm guessing you mean ego death is thinking your dead, and having your ego lost, whereas ego loss is losing it just through sitting there and having it dissapear.

I dunno. Ego death just made me feel like I was going crazy. I still feel like I'm going crazy. It totally changed my sober life. And fuck even my weed high! If I smoke a jay, and a bowl or two. I'll have a complete depersonalization/derealization and will be floating out of my body. I'll be looking at a friend, and AHRHGR!

Sometimes it feels like to much.
