Transcending Ego

RP = Random Poster Swami = Swami
RP: I truly desire to transcend my ego. How many grams of mushrooms must I take? How many years must I meditate?
(We will overlook the fact that desire is an ego trait.)
*Swami pushes RPs buttons and RP flys into a rage.*
RP: Swami, you are such a total jerk!
Swami: When you no longer emotionally react to mere words on a page, then you are almost there. Your outburst is based in ego.
RP: Don't be so condescending, I want to know how to transcend ego not listen to your "clever" deconstruction.
Swami: *shrugs*

I should probably add to that. The desire to escape desires, while ironic, is usually the first step. From here, this desire dissolves too, to leave pure void in it's place. Letting go isn't a forced action or 'want', it's the ceasation of other desires and wants. To some degree, every living human has desires, atleast on the subconscious level. The best one I can think of is the desire to sustain self existence. One doesn't seek to be compeltely desireless (necessarily), just seek to eliminate the illusionary ties from your conscious state to your programmed desires. From there, it's almost funny

What is worth emotionally responding to?
The only things I can see is unnecessary suffering and death.

Define unnecessary in terms outside of a subjective mindset.
I could say hot dogs are unnecessary, yet others may disagree.
Suffering is the same. Pain is a signal, it's you who creates the suffering.
And death, that's inevitable, and truly never unnecessary.

I would define unecessary in this instance as: an indirect result to ones actions or unobstrusive lifestyle.
For example, you're a Muslim in a Iraq and you're eating pizza in a pizza resturant and someone decides to blow themselves up to spread a message to illegal occupation in their country, but the shrapnel wounds you and kills 30 others. Both the occupation and suicide bombing are unnecessary. Or a parent getting jailed for smoking a joint in his/her apartment at 10:30 at night to relax. That is unecessary.
I could go on and on but that is unecessary. What is necessary is understanding we are on the same rock in space and we all need to join together and realize we're brothers and sisters.

bravery:
not neccasserally exemplified by suffering.
bravery
n 1: a quality of spirit that enables you to face danger of pain without showing fear [syn: courage, courageousness] [ant: cowardice] 2: feeling no fear [syn: fearlessness] [ant: fear] 1. The condition or quality of being brave; courage. 2. Splendor or magnificence; show.
suffering is in the perspective of the beholder. ive been through many events that some people have suffered through, but i merely waited them out, tried not to be bored.
suffering has nothing to do with bravery... your thinking of martyrdom?
and even then martyrdom is ridiculous in my eyes.

David Humes proved that suffering is nessecary without it moral reality begins to crumble it was argued in the problem of evils and defeated the complex problem of evils is still unsolved bravery was an example, a soldier endures suffering in battle and is seen virtous when he triumphs there are many cases where what is virtous is based on overcoming of fears, pains, or suffering

psyka, you is right. we are all brothers and sisters... those brothers and sisters doing the arresting and the blowing up, they must have felt it was neccassery, right? our ideas of what is neccassery must align before family state can be achieved. if. [edited because i misspelled your name]

What is worth emotionally responding to?
Good question, but I will take the liberty of rephrasing your question if that is OK. A better question is: When is an emotional response appropriate or beneficial?
There is no specific case such as "anger is apropriate when your life is threatened" as I may be alive today because I did NOT get angry (or display it anyway).
Anger (and grief) can be useful as a motivator such as the founder of M.A.D.D.
Anger in traffic generally serves absolutely no purpose and thus can be discarded.
I beat people in poker all the time because of misplaced anger. This may surprise some here, but I NEVER goad anyone at the poker table. I try instead to be "invisible". Instead of trying to learn why they lost, they get angry and personalize it. "I always lose with that dealer" or "I am going to get him!" This form of emotionalism clouds judgement.
I played racquetball against a young-un this week and he got so frustrated he smashed his $125 racquet on the wall. What is the point? Yes, he got 300 milliseconds of satisfaction, but now must work a full day or so to replace the equipment. A 25 year friend threatened me over nothing last month. I ended the relationship. He projected his personal frustrations on me in a violent and unprovoked manner. It took him 30 seconds to destroy something built up over decades. Now you may think that I am over-reacting to his outburst, but it took me weeks to come to that tough decision.
This is a repeat: "Do the emotions serve you?" If yes, continue; if not, discontinue.
Simple.
-------------------- The proof is in the pudding.
