Awhile back, Ralphster posted something to the effect of using a fork on a casing; not scratching, more like 'cracking' the casing. Pushing the fork in and wiggling it a little, then doing another spot, and so on. [or something like that]

I saw a coir casing that was a bit too colonized [a problem I can deal with!], it was covered with syran wrap and the mycelium had started to grow against this wrap--panning. It wasn't too far along, so I put it into the terrarium and started forking it. I switched to a nice sharp knife and cut little rows through the entire casing, making a tic-tac-toe/checkerboard pattern, making little 'panned squares' of about .5"X.5". I only went about 1/2" deep or so, and did not bother any of the other mycelium.
I'll be damned, 48 hours later great pinning through each of my little cut lines. It's a little like planting rows of seed in a garden, except you do the hoe-ing AFTER everything is planted :)

Hey! I remember that! It was on DD. It actually sort of freaked me out 'cause it was just the advice I needed to get a slow-starting casing going. I thought Ralph was tracking me or reading my mind or something. ;)

After I got TMC, I found the same advice inside practically word for word. Covers both 'scratching' and 'deep scratching'. Stamets recommends a board w/ 16 penny nails sticking through to do the scratching. He must work w/ some really big casings!
