Trouble pinning coir cased bulk
    #2015202 - 10/16/03 05:33 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

I have two boxes of straw/dung cased with coir and verm going in a makeshift terrarium that i cant get to pin. I think it's because I had to use some crappy coir. It isn't the stringy stuff and doesn't hold moisture very well and it took for ever to colonize. So 2-3 mistings a day are required just to keep it moist. They were colonized at 84*F, after that it was dropped to 60*F and is now back to 70*F. They get more than enough air exchange and have sufficient light. This is only the third day though... how long should i wait before I get worried.

Holy shit... your kidding! Most of my casings I used to do were pinning on the second day... jeez, I had no idea. Do you think it's beneficial to have the temp around 60 or should I just keep it at 70?

Can someone help me clear something up that Icant find an answer to by searching or FAQ.

1)When a casing is sufficiently colonized and ready to be put into a terrarium,(assuming the substrate was already done befroe casing)it takes a little while after being put into the terr for the myc to stop eating right?
2)And when it does stop, pinning begins?
3)would the amount of time it takes for it to stop eating be directly related to the amount of substrate used... ie 2 brf cakes taking considerably less time than a 8" deep bulk substrate to finish eating and therefore start pinning?

1)When a casing is sufficiently colonized and ready to be put into a terrarium,(assuming the substrate was already done befroe casing)it takes a little while after being put into the terr for the myc to stop eating right? -Not really. Once the temps change that drstically it stops pretty quickly, slowing to a near halt.

2)And when it does stop, pinning begins? - That's the next step in the cycle yeah. Well specifically hyphal knots -> primordia -> pins

3)would the amount of time it takes for it to stop eating be directly related to the amount of substrate used... ie 2 brf cakes taking considerably less time than a 8" deep bulk substrate to finish eating and therefore start pinning? -Not necessarily no.
