what have i done? (? scratching disaster)
    #1228150 - 01/18/03 06:40 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

shirley had a casing that was put in the terrarium too late, and thinks she got overlay: the surface was maybe 70-80% covered. cambodians under coir / verm / oyster. 1" of cakes, sliced lengthwise.

in the tub, it eventually formed weeny hyphal knots everywhere (as if my beanbag had burst open above the tub) but then nothing for a week and then one, maybe two pins. then these aborted, and nothing for another week.

"damn", I said, "must be overlay". i gave the (entirely white) surface a spray, and the result looked like the skislopes from a cessna: some parts of the white 'melted away' leaving three large ?stromas (?don't know if this is the right way to use this word) like the matterhorns.

i got a fork, scratched along, gathering up some material and chucking it away (don't ask me why i did this, maybe there were a couple of mini-primordia i wanted to stop from rotting). recased with coir/verm/oyster. that was a week ago - not much happening.

did i deep scratch? why didn't it work? oh.....  :frown:

i'm worried that the newly applied casing layer was 'off' in pH or something, and am considering scraping the lot off (i also used it for some new casings the other day, and these are also doing nothing after 4 days) and replacing with good old 50/50+

anyone else?

With coir? I don't think so, but I may be off.

If I were you, I'd just deep scratch it with clean fork and stick the fucker back in the incubation chamber. After you deep scratch you can apply a thin layer of casing material.

Personally, I'd ditch the other stuff and use just coir. No messing around with pH, holds 9x its weight in water. What more could you want? Beats verm any day.

sorry to dredge up this old thread, but this bastard still aint fixed.

cased 1st dec
patch-cased 12th dec
birthed 18th dec -over 90% covered, overlay diagnosed too late
first fruit 1st jan - then nothing
scratch-recased-reincubated 7th jan
nothing: rescratched, rebirthed 25th jan

the rest of the crop has been harvested long ago (45g from 7 half-pints)

now what? give it up and bin it?

not sure what fugu was saying but I believe he means to use your non-productive mycelia as spawn for new substrate. it sounds as if your mycelia is in some state of shock. does there not seem to be any aging/regression/dying of themycelium? does it continue to grow/overlay? it seems you may not have been patient enough for your next flush. the repeated incubations may have exhausted your nutrients entirely. it's all guesswork to me.

I hate to say it, but I think that would be your best option. I mean, its only one casing, no big deal. Hell, in the time you've been fucking with this casing, you could've prepared, sterilized, incubated, colonized, birthed, and fruited an entire batch.

Oh well, good luck.
