Paging the Pros: Tips on getting a kick-ass pin set?

The mushies in my kitten's casings always seem to grow in huge "clusters", instead of an even pin set all the way across. She patches during incubation, but is there anything else she can do?
Any tips from you guys who have mastered the "Perfect Pin Set?"

I am still working on getting the 'perfect pin set', but its getting better, a few things
1. Make sure the substrate and casing are the same thickness all over.
2. Water evenly and gently. Lots of TLC
3. Patch over the early spots with a little casing mix.
I am not sure about scratching, I think I am going to try a few experiments.

Just make sure the substrate is level and also the casing layer. When you see the mycelium coming up through all of the little valley's,then induce the pinning process, and you you should get a relatively nice and even pinset! I think i am going to try scratching for my casings that are colonizing right now, do you do it after all of the patching with a fork lightly or what else would be better to use?

I only patch the very first signs of "aggresive growth".I usually wait, after noticing it coming through,a day to see if it is going to even out and if it doesn't,then I patch it.
I don't scratch my casing unless I notice overlay and delay of pinning, then,in an attempt to getting it to pin,I will scratch the surface and recase it,but only then.I use a fork, wiped with alcohol.

I think that clusters are often attributes of strains. Some strains tend to cluster more than others. Also, is your kitten using multispore cultures? I think this would increase clustering. If your kitten can get closer to an isolate by doing grain to grain transfers or get a pure strain by cloning a fruitbody, clustering should be significantly reduced.
Stamets suggests picking the first pins that form to get a more even pinset. This way the early ones are removed so that the rest are all on the same schedule. This should reduce the situation where there is one dominating mushroom in a cluster and the rest are small or aborted.
And of course all of this is in addition to the previously mentioned tips.
Good luck

You know, I hear about patching and stuff but I?m just to fucken lazy. What I do is simple, as soon as I see myc poking threw (any myc) I put the casing in the chamber. (It?s not always smart to do as I do.)

I think I?ll tell my kitten to try that technique sometime...
