it's hard to lump people into two such nebulous categories.

specifically, conservative, in the traditional sense, with some
liberal tendancies in the contemporary sense.

I'm not sure that this is the best time to drop sanctions on arms trades with them, but I can certainly understand the reasoning behind it.

How about not selling so many guns in the first place? The USA has 45% of the worlds arms market, more than DOUBLE the next highest arms supplier. The USA makes billions of dollars every year by extending and enhancing the misery of the rest of the world (which, down the road, always causes problems for the USA...to which their usual response is either to bomb someone, or just give them some MORE guns).

Why comment on my opinion if you didn't understand it? It's more like "we'll treat you more like an equal if you treat you citizens better, and help to neutralize the threat North Korea presents". Like I said, I'm not sure that opening arms trades immediately is a good idea, but since China has been beginning to do these things, even in a small way, giving them incentive to keep moving in this direction is a good idea.

first, that response was to who it was named for.

second, you think that giving them weapons is giving them
incentive?

incentive to shoot the protestors in tienamen, maybe.

if you want to continue to encourage their entry into the
21st century, give them food aid, open trade barriers,
send them electronics and goods, you don't have to give
them fucking guns to keep them on the road to civility,
that's just ludicrous.

No, more I see a dragon coming out of its sleep onto the world stage, its hungry for oil and looking which side to choose, and giving it the finger right now is a really bad idea given the other candidates.

I don't think anyone here has suggested giving them the
finger with the exception of myself, perhaps.

Phluck has a point, to some degree, but I fear China's

Exactly, it is what I mean by a sleeping dragon. It has already the power to destroy the world with nukes, its in 'the club', however China is a nation of secrets and rarely conducts politics in public.

It would hate to see it angry.

I not saying arms dealing is right, what I am saying is that it is the duty of government to managed a healthy economic environment for the people it represents. Arms deals tend to be the icing one the cake with many deals. You can't wade through shit and come up smelling roses.

I've posted this idea before. I think China is witholding support on N. Korea to leverage concessions on Taiwan. Taiwan has obsessed them for all the time the ChiComs have existed and they desperately want us to remove our support for it's sovereignity. It's actually disgusting, on our part as well, that Taiwan has not been recognized by the UN. It has produced a tinderbox that should have been taken care of before there were nukes but the fucking soviets thought they could use the Chinese as allies to save them from their inevitable collapse
