a thought on evolution

Survival of the fittest is natures way to improve species. But in the world we live in now (most parts) almost any genetics will be passed on to the next generation. So many people who are 'weak' and would have died if it was up to mother nature live and reproduce because of the caring society we live in. I think this slows down the evolution of the human species.  Who has an opinion on this?

just for the record I'm not saying all people who are less fortune/ 'weak' or have any other disadvantages should die :smirk:

At the beginning of the industrial revolution, the working class had it shitty. There would bea family of 6 or 7 living in a single room. By the age of 12 a boy would begin working in coal mines. The average lifespan for the lower middle class male was 15.

The wealthy justified this with the same kind of logic your talking about, saying that this would ensure that only the strongest and fittest specimens would live to breed.

But yeah what you are saying is true. I think in a way this is a major problem. Even the stupidest, most unhealthy, weakest organisms breed and reproduce. This is why democracy no longer works. The first world is simply to full of idiots, due to a termination of the processes of natural selection and survival of the fittest. This is the only explanation i have been able to come up with for why george bush is winning the election race.

Modern medicine leads to longer lives which leads to overpopulation, which leads to rampant disease, which will kill off the weak, so the strong survive. You can't really circumvent natural selection. We only think we can.

I thought surival of the fittest meant that the fittest genus/species would survive, not the strongest members of a certain genus/species. I also think Darwin's ideas were not meant to be applied to humans. I also think that all people are born equally fit, regardless of genetics, it's just a matter of where a person's seed happens to land.

Because the things that people are bringing up in this thread offset the natural selection that takes place in an anarchaic animal kingdom.

I used to think this way, that our modern ways have some how slowed down evolution. However I think Darwinism still exists, through other means. Look at the movie Gattaca. Although our society trys to convey that those with handicaps and lesser genes should be treated equally, those with enough money (in the near future) will be able to ensure that their offspring can outperform others. Leading to a number of concequences I cannot foresee. Darwinism is still alive.

it's about the strongest members of a specie and it applies to all life. plants, animals, fungi etc

I also don't think people are born equally 'fit'. Good genetics will lead to better survival. Also it doesn't depend completely on where someone is born because with good genetics they'll survive better there too.

Reading this and other threads on evolution here, I've finally begun understanding something that has always baffled me. If this is what people actually believe evolution is, I now understand how eugenics can still be so popular.
