    #3139832 -

I was on a hike today and usually i dont hunt for shrooms *usually* but today i stumbled on this beautiful specimen...

a nice view of the cap

the whatchacallit (underside...see the coors?-ive downed about 3...vocab not too great)

Anywho im 90 percent sure it is a amanita muscaria but i figured a few opinions never hurts. Thanks in advance

EDIT: oh yeah, it was found central east coast in a young (75 years) coniferous forest. It was at the edge of a trail w/ plenty of light. uhh im not sure what else to say about it.

I agree with nofind_um. It's an Amanita, it's very pretty and photogenic, and I don't think it's Amanita muscaria.

Happy mushrooming!

"Fly Agaric - yellow/orange (Amanita muscaria var. formosa). DESCRIPTION: A. muscaria
var. formosa is the yellow-orange Fly Agaric mushroom"

??

If its orange ,what else COULD it be?

Hi Psilocybeinggzzzz...

Notice the yellowing of the stipe,
marginal lip, and veil remnants...
That pretty much rules out A. muscaria,
and A. Muscaria var. Formosa... sorry...
it does,, and the bulb doesn't have the
whispy concentric circles.... it should..
It appears hard and smooth.... I can't
get either from those,,,
As to what it is or could be I'm stumped....
maybe A. Flavoconia....Here's a link,,,,

Link... A. Flavoconia...

i wouldnt say it to be a. flavoconia due to the almost complete lack of dominant yellow color which the link said as a distinguishing feature. its not a muscaria im convinced now but then...what is it?

Cap color is *greatly* overrated as an identification characteristic by a lot of people. Here's a short list of a few (not all) at least sometimes orange capped Amanitas:

Amanita muscaria
A. flavoconia
A. flavorubens
A. flavipes
A. rubescens
A. diemii
A. frostiana
A. mira
A. xanthocephala

I've deliberately left out all of the various close relatives of Amanita caesarea, as well as several obscure Asian and African species.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that *all* books (short of monographs) have only a selection of a few species from each genus (with a very few exceptions, mostly for genera with very few species). So the list of species we see in a book is far from a complete list of the species there are. Most authors try to list the more common species so that most specimens you find will be listed, but it's not at all difficult to find mushrooms that are not listed in any of the field guides currently in print. Even if you had a list of every known species, the estimates I've heard from professionals indicate that we've probably described about a third of the total species of mushrooms that exist currently in North America. Admittedly, most of those species will be tiny, obscure things that the average person would never even notice exist, but it still gives the idea that being able to name every mushroom accurately is not realistically possible.

Happy mushrooming!
