Things I have noticed

#1) poo out preforms str8 WBS casings!

#2) you need to cut the poo with something. To make it essayer for the myc to colonize.

#3) different casing materials turn out different.

So you can hit the FAQ's on here and learn a lot more than what I am about to say.

Cutting the Poo

First off I have yet to get any straw. I have however tried several things and all seem to work.

Substrates to spawn to:

S1) 100% Cow poo : of 3 tries all 3 took forever to colonize (REAL SLOW) and all 3 contaminated before they colonized to 100%

S2) 50% cow poo and 50% vermiculite : It worked real good. I got good flushed and some strong cubies.

S3) 50% Cow Poo, 25% Vermiculite, 25% coco-coir : This seems to work real well. They have not fruited yet but they colonized VARY fast!

S4) 50% Cow Poo, 40% Coco-Coir, 10% hay : This one was spawned 3 days ago and is at 90% colonization. It has been lightning fast!

Casing material :

C1) 100% Coco-Coir :  This worked but tended to overlay. I have given up on using 100% coir as a casing.

C2) 100% Vermiculite : Although this worked it seemed to take longer for the myc to make it through the casing layer. Maybe seemed was the wrong word. On average it took twice as long.

C3) 50% Coco-Coir 50% Vermiculite : This has been the best so far. It works well, I have not had a problem with overlay, and it seems to fruit well.

Spawning :

When spawning to cow poo I have read many responces from many people suggesting a 1:10 or a 1:5 ratio. Ignore them! I am sure this works but not for me. They seem to contaminate long before the spawn takes hold. My best success has been doing a 1:1 and a 1:2 ratio. Measured by the pint. So for each pint of spawn I add 1 or 2 pints of substrate. Takes less time to reach 100%, gives the contaminates nothing to hold on to, and works good for me!


First off make your rye jars and get them colonized!
(Although this is a WBS tek it should work for rye)

Second pasteurize the substrate to be spawned to

Let it cool, spawn the substrate, and put it in the incubator tell it is colonized.

Then make a casing mix, pasteurize the casing mix, let it cool, then for every 1" of substrate add 1/4" of casing. Keep moist and fruit.

I have tried 1:5 - 1:10 ratios, it is just that they seem to contaminate a lot more that the 1:1 or 1:2. I would always suggest that some one starting out spawning to poo start out at a lower spawn ratio if only to reduces the chances of failure. This is just what has worked for me. I may start working on uping the spawn ratio before long. I am needing to get more spawn from a smaller area.

As for the straw. I have not found any yet. I kept the HAY ratio low to avoid contamination. Everything I have read on here has suggested that if you use hay you should keep it below 20% of the total.
