Got a good tek buddy?

Hopefully you have a little space in the tops of your jars. You can case with coir, then cover with a pin prick holed baggie, or put the jars in a fruiting chamber, eg water tub, to help with surface conditions. :awesomenod:

dont really need a tek its just some prepped coir/verm or whatever you are using evenly covering the top of the grains maybe haalf inch worth and treat like you would anything you are fruiting.

works really well even if you throw it out.

That's some next level punishing. Love it :canthelpbutlaugh:

Trying to search for info on this but struggling to find examples where there's only a couple of split grains.

Are my jars ok for noccing? I have a few grains in each jar which look like they went soft/split.

It's only a few per jar.

Tek followed:
Cold rinse for 60 seconds to remove starch
Hot flash to bring rice up to temp (15 seconds)
Dump into boiling water and simmer/boil for 9mins.
Allow to air dry (no rinse).
PC 90min@15psi.

Second batch of 5 jars seemed to have a few grains go soft.. 99% of the jar looks good otherwise.

Yeah what Ras said. It's all good! You will burst a few grains here and there getting all the others properly hydrated. Never seen a jar without at least 1.

:whathesaid: *They*

A few here and there are totally fine. For rice particularly the burst grain comes from the simmer time and temp.  I've found that getting the rolling boil to a full 212ยฐF before dumping the rice in, and then simmer at 207-210ยฐF for that 9 minute keeps the bursted grains at bay but still allowing a solid hydration of the grain. Ive been running grain prep with a meat thermometer in the pot while i do it to really dial the numbers in.

While we're on grains... be real with me. Is this millet shit? Cause its seems like shit lol. See attached video.

LCs that should be flying are like I barely put anything at all. Slow and thin. The grains pour readily, it doesn't seem like there's any moisture at all. I cut some in half and while they seem like they're cooked through, they also seem like they're dried through.

Standard 2:1 NSNS hydration ratio.

Could longer PC times do this?

When it comes out of the PC, the 50% on the top should move like that, but the bottom half should be a puck of grains that requires shaking to break it all up, even then it'll be a little clumpy. It looks like they didn't hydrate properly.

Are you using the No prep millet Tek?

That ratio should be working. I cook mine for 2 hours. If you are cooking longer, maybe more moisture is boiling off than what should be.

Yep. Same ratio, same tek, if you can even call it a tek lol. When they come out the bottom is definitely sticky/clumpy and I have to do a hot shake before it sets up to get them well integrated.

But I think I did 3hrs of PC. Same problem even on my big bags (1kg millet each), which I'd have guessed would be harder to dehydrate. Gonna assume that's my problem and dial it back to 90.

25lbs in the mail so I guess I'll have some room to experiment with getting it right.

I just did a bunch of popcorn and it's missing (used), where does all the spawn go, wtf :mad2:

Fire, if thats your only project, you could still send it to bulk to test your luck. If you'd like to salvage the genetics you can learn Agar and clean up the culture.:mushroom2:

What are some good ways to fruit a culture which I can't clean on agar? I'm certain it will fruit if I don't need to break the colony.

I'm thinking about top fruiting PF and putting it in a grain spawn bag?

It's a GT clone culture that looks like this on agar.

koma23 said:
I have this B+ spores which I can't seem to clean up - grows end up triching out. This is the back of a T5 plate. Made a T6, but it also has these lines. Am I presuming correctly that these lines are a sign of contam? The front looks nice though.

And same as this culture the GT one fails on the 30% shake on grain (it doesn't actually fail it colonizes fully but it's not good). I tried putting in a brf puck and then back to agar but still, same issue and grain looks bad after shake so I'm not going to fruit it. But the agar puck has two lovely in vitro fruits (which went albino I think for some reason, that I don't want as the original culture is like this very nice orange/golden fruits, but I will clone it nevertheless), so I know I can get fruits to clone and rescue this culture if I skip breaking up the colony after inoculation ...

I'm probably over thinking it but hopefully my last question for now..

If you steralized grain jars but forgot to tighten the lids up and they sat on your bench for 24hrs.. would you make new jars? AI is suggesting it's a moderate bacterial risk while they cooled they could pull air through the threads/seams.

Lids are unmodded, flipped and foil over the top.

It's 7 qts worth and a reasonable about of liquid culture (for me). so I guess I just want to be safe.

Does this mean they are already inoculated? :syringe:
I feel like that should be fine, I've had similar cases.

If they're not already inoculated you can wait and see.

AI is always going to affirm the bias you came into the question with.
Not a recommended source of info for this endeavor.
or at all but that's a different story. :hehehe:

Risky business indeed. It definitely pulls vacuum as it cools dude. 7 qts of grain is nothing. I'd toss them.

But what the determining factor is, is if you pulled the jars out hot or let the PC cool to room temp. If they stayed in the PC and cooled naturally, I wouldn't worry. That's how I sometimes do it without issue. If I'm not running loads back to back. Regardless of the PC itself pulling vacuum as it cools, it does not seem to ever be an issue for the jars themselves.

Science that I don't understand.

I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but does this coco coir seem OK to use?

Anyone have any experience with it? It says suitable for reptile and turtle use which I'm guessing means it doesn't have any unwanted extras
