Cultivating my patience (+dumpster diving and gourmet) * 1
    #29705190 -

Welcome

Here I'll post updates on my journey through mushroom cultivation, with the hope of it being useful to other people,
for that matter I'll reserve the first post after the original post to write the important things I learn, and unlearn.

Expect this post to be minimalist, with only what I value as essential information.
I love to measure and keep track of data, so expect a lot of that too.

I also like to dumpster dive and will share that here. I know it might sound like a borderline topic, but I like to think that like fungi,
I give value to what is considered waste to others.

Second, I invite you to engage with generosity of interpretation,
with politeness and curiosity.
Advices and comments are super welcome.

Context
I have approached mushroom cultivation around 3 years and half ago (early 2023) with little success,
after the first year and half, I moved to a different location and struggled since then with many failures, and almost to no success.
Everything else, like my setup and my tools, you'll find out reading through~

Starting in 3, 2, 1...

Today I harvested some ochra.

I like to use one hand to remove the coir/verm from the fruits and to keep one hand clean.
Here's the cake after it got humiliated and punished, I'm trying it for the first time.

Brief history of this cake: I spawned 1 myco liter (fuck the imperial units) to 2 tubs it was fruiting upside down, so this cake was removed, flipped and put on the tub lid,
with a thin coir blanket to keep it from drying (I wouldn't do it again) and left in my growing tent with a setting of 91% relative humidity, 4% buffer (the fogger starts at 88%).
With that setting the humidity reaches 95,7% max.
There is an air pump that turns on and pumps out the air for 4 minutes every hour.

Some dumpster diving loot

That's around 34kg total, just the bananas are 18kg, most of it will go in the dehydrator with the ochra.

Next update: this evening after work.
Stay hydrated.

Nice ochra! :yummy:
Looking forward to seeing new additions.

Also curious about your post dumpster produce processing and how you maintain food safety.

Hi Cicadoidea

An important detail is that I dumpster dive only in the bins of supermarkets, I would never go to bins used to throw house waste, those are gross.

I treat different products in different ways, for example the bananas have the peel, so it's safe to remove it, cut them and dehydrate. I discard the damaged ones to my compost pile, but there are hardly any.

For things like the black tuscan kale, which is eaten as it is, and it's a leaf, I take it only if it's not touching anything rotten. Luckily the dumpster bins I go to are really clean, and they put everything into clean plastic bags, which are somewhat sorted. For example the bread is all in one bag, with individual loaves inside it's individual bag, and usually it's just one day old, still soft.
So the kale I was writing about I know it's safe because I know it was in a clean bag, sealed from the bin, only with other fruits/vegetables that were not rotten.
I can share videos and pictures if you're curious

Yesterday I cleaned a bunch of glass plates, it's tedious, but I like reusable things.

I use 60mm plates, that size is convenient cause they fit inside my liter jars,  8 each.

Jars have lids with filters to allow the pressure in.
I used to sterilize the plates together with media bottles, but recently I decided to sterilize them on a separate cycle that lasts longer: 15 mins venting and then 1 and half hour at 15 PSI.
The reason I decided to change protocol is to be extra sure the plates are clean. Even tho I noticed very very rarely contaminations growing on plates I poured and stored.

Then I set myself to pour PDA gellan gum (GG) plates, that's my second time using GG, the first time it came out okay, but wasn't very clear, and clearness is the reason I decided to switch from agar-agar to GG.

Following the instructions of strawboy in the Fahtster post that said to mix potato dextrose powder with GG powder and mix it with cold water, I made a what I thought to be a mistake. I decided to use the blender to mix those ingredients and ended up with this goo.

Confused, I thought the worst: it's already gelling up. And GG, unlike agar-agar, once it sets it can't be melted to set again.
But I decided to continue, simmering the goo made it liquify (my worries grew). Bottles filled, and into the PC. While it was venting I felt more and more worried that I am wasting my time and that the GG won't set.

I opened the PC, took everything out and set up my work space again to start over without the blender eheh
Out of curiosity, before disposing of the media, I poured some in a cup to see if it would gel up. And it did. Good to know! I could have went through, the goo was not a problem.

Everything went smooth after restarting.
I want to share that I use thin cloth gloves under the nitrile ones, it' helps with handling hot stuff, still giving me the opportunity to spray alcohol on hands. I don't remember where I learned this, maybe I saw it from someone in this forum, in case let me know so I can mention you!

The GG started setting only when under 32°C (90F) wow!

Clear plates, yay!

I also poured 4 island plates.

In total I poured 28 plates (60mm), 4 of which are island plates.
Used only 300ml, I think I poured thin, but it's okay, maybe next time I'll do 350ml just to have more room for heavier pours.

I used strawboy's recipe for gellan gum media, except I don't use potato dextrose broth powder, and need to add my blend of potato flakes and dextrose.
And followed this procedure.
_______________________________
The recipe I used:
0.8% gellan gum powder
1% dextrose
2 rounded tbsp of potato flakes (equivalent of 8g)
0.04% magnesium chloride

Meanwhile in the tent the pink oysters are pinning near the cuts!

These bags are bacterial, I switched to bigger bags but don't have a sealer that is big enough and it's making it really hard to work in front of the flowhood cleanly. I'll swap to reusable zip ties for the next batch!

Lab session

Ind01 (thanks stagger!):

I took a closeup of the edge because it looks strange, we'll see how it develops. Made one plate with a wedge transfer and one plate with a tiny aerial myc. Those plates are T1s, and are exactly 14 days old. I think the low temperatures are hindering the growth, I put the freshly made plates in the grow tent insiede a tupperware since there the bag of gourmets are heating the environment and outside of the tent I don't have heating.

I'm pretty excited to grow ind01!
That's why I also sent the plates in 3 rye jars. I put one in the warmer grow tent to see if it will grows faster.

I have done some transfers from zaps Texolo (thanks Phaethon), and sent it even tho I suspect there is something else growing in the plate. Or maybe it's just the mycelium knotting.

You can see the "knotting" at 2 o'clock.

Speaking of zaps, I also have this jar that got shaken around 5 days ago, I heard Texolo is really slow, and since it looks healthy for now, I'm not worried. Even tho it was inoculated with a T0.

I put it in the tent for better temperatures.

I inoculated a plate with bisporus (thanks again stagger!) using a swab, this is the second time I try to germ bisporus, the first time I couldn't catch it before a mold started sporulating in the plate.
I wish I didn't need to have a job so I could dedicate all my time to this expensive hobby.

I have this plate that was streaked with RustyWhyte (Phaethon blessed me with these) that's been sitting for more than 30 days without germinating. Some days ago I was reading about stubborn spores and how to deal with situations like mine, and decided to hydrate them with some sterile water using a swab. I wet the swab in the water and then gently caress the plate. Since some of the spores got trapped in the swab, I streaked another plate

I'm super excited to grow the RW strain, because I hold Pasty in high regards. I learned a lot from reading his posts, and feel a deep gratitude. I hope the spores germinate so I can someday share prints and spread the gratitude.

And that's how the lab session ended.
