I do pre-pours all the time. Condensation is just something you have to deal with.

I try to make some a couple weeks before I need them. If you store them upside down after they've cooled all the Condensation is reabsorbed or collects on the lid. You can just pour off the excess.

Just make agar every week or two to constantly have enough dry plates.

Milkboy's PDA uses Karo or molasses and he states he likes the molasses better due to pigment

Found an old but good looking plate of Gemini from a clone.

What would you grab to put onto new agar? Just mycelium, or plop a plin? Gonna do a plate of each at least.

The one slightly to the right of center is a cluster, so I think that might be the one.

Awesome now im excited for agar.
Are there any good videos about the agar workflow? I've heard about stacks, but also grabbing them from the bottom of the bag one at a time? I've bought some Petri dishes LME, agar, and a media bottle.

Agar is fun! Here's the link to RR's videos. There were some other's like this one but they have been removed from the platform(yt).
I have this bookmarked for agar references, very useful.

This might be a stupid question, but my impatience is getting the better of me and I figured there's no harm in asking.

This is a spore plate I made a while ago. I took a couple transfers already and stashed it away, but when I came back the growth on it was shockingly strong and looks very nice to me. The only oddity is the circle in the middle surrounding where I jabbed my scalpel to get the spores off. Would it be advisable to send a chunk of this plate to spawn or is that plan most likely destined for disappointment?

When the plate is overgrown like that it is incredibly difficult for even experienced eyes to tell if it's healthy or not.

Just because it's white, doesn't necessarily mean that it's free from mold and bacteria.

You can always inoculate a jar with it to see what happens, but if I was forced to place a bet on any overgrown MS plate I would bet contam 100% of the time.

That being said, I have seen some incredibly clean plates from spores that were made by members of this community that I would consider sending straight to grain. I haven't done it, but they have been so clean that it would probably work fine.

:whathesaid: Most likely destined for disappointment. Spores are inherently dirty. Just the way prints are taken. I've taken a germ plate to grain before, but the spores came off of a plin print from a T3.

The spores gotta be really clean to work with them like that. It's not impossible for you to get mushrooms from it, but the likelihood of contamination is pretty high.

Thanks! Had a feeling that was the answer. Patience continues to be the hardest technique to master for me. The waiting is starting to drive me mad so when I saw that plate full of fluffy mycelium it had me thinking unwise thoughts. Glad I didn't waste the grain and time.

Probably going to be disappointed but if you have the materials available and want to FAFO then go for it!  Worst case scenario you're out a jar or two and you know what bad looks like.  Best case you have a couple of jars to spawn!

You know, you've got me thinking. Maybe I'll dig out a small jar we don't use often and use it to experiment. I could make some larger jars while I'm at it and give them some time to make sure my sterilization and prep are good. That way I'm not wasting much grain and I'm killing two birds with one stone for the effort.

You are asking for trouble, especially if new and planning on using spores.

Corn is a tricky one, expands quite a bit as well I think? No personal experience.

Best advice is dont scale up too big, dont put all your eggs in one basket especially if new to this. better to do more smaller jars, spawn small tubs of 2 quarts, spread out the risk factor.

What to do with shoeboxes which have dried out like this? Some are already knotting but other's not yet. Put a thin layer of pete verm casing or just coir?

you can do as big a jar as you can fit in a pressure cooker, but that's way too full for dry grains, they'll get about 1.5x bigger when hydrated. it's the right level for wet grains though when you do end up filling them. (agree with huskies though on small bets when starting out, esp if from spore. reputable vendor LC through an injection port... less worrisome IMO)

koma those look fine. bit of mist to keep surface conditions good, some bottom watering if things look dire (I wouldn't, personally), but certainly don't bury them in anything.

Good plan. you don't have to throw it out though. The thing which I would do is start new agar plates from that germ plate then clean them properly.
