Cool project! Next addition could be an app for your phone where you see what the camera sees but data about the plates shown as an overlay. Or even an app for those voyeur glasses

Is the data about the plate encoded in the QR code? Or is it a reference to a database record or something like that?

Love it. ShroomCreepโ„ข. The latter, rn. Encoding all of the info would require more squares in the QR code (and require a reprint to update), and I want to keep it as simple as possible so that it stays easy to print and read at tiny sizes. So just a short ID. like 0001GT etc.

Im guessing that you want to store more info than is on the pic above...

Pardon my dumbness, but my current record keeping only involves Genetics name/Transfer number/ and sometimes the date if im feeling particularly intelligent at the time of labeling

Any progress on this?

Mine has gotten a little bit off track from the original idea, but overall is going to be something neat I think!

I have a camera for dish imaging, it picks up the QR code to assign image updates to the source tracking. The images are being used to train an inference model for predicting growth patterns.

I unfortunately can not anonymously share the source code as I have brought in work that could be used to identify me. I am working on a defanged version of the service that will not have those features, but it's a low priority effort.

Some, yes, but nothing huge.

Fiddled with fonts and data encoding stuff to get the sticker nicer looking, denser, and more legible. nvm already posted that apparently.

I have started on the software for tracking all of this stuff. I'm spending a lot of thought at the beginning getting the domain modeling right. Strong typing ftw. There's a lot of node vs edge, noun vs verb things that I would like to be well modeled at the beginning because I viscerally hate dealing with migration integrity. It seems like Belintaf is bumping into this also, expanding to various kinds of grain etc.

I am getting good mileage out of vessels, substrates, and occupants. This allows you to describe containers, recipes, and cultures independently and in a way that maps cleanly to all parts of the process, including contamination. A spore print has a null substrate (air). An uninoculated grain jar has no occupants. A contaminated or cross streak plate has multiple occupants. Etc.

The thing that has been most obnoxious to define so far is breaking up cultures in ways that match my mental models. For example I have multiple GT varieties from different vendors. I have a whole bunch of ochras. And there are subcultures that I care about. The "hims blob" is a branch of my white rabbit that did a bunch of crazy shit and that I now run as its own thing. So the line isn't cleanly mappable to vendor, strain/variety, etc. It's fairly arbitrary. I'll probably end up going with something hyper generic like "group".

So far my approach is to list everything on the shelf and fridge in one big file with all the properties I care about, and then stress test the model by confirming it can actually encode all these things. This has been useful.

--

Is your dish imaging above, below, or both? If above, lid on or lid off? I'm going for both and both.

Predicting growth is a fun branch. It's neat to see everyone's different priorities. At least three of us are working on this, and yet none of it seems particularly similar so far.

--

Lang to answer your question, "the past", mostly. What did this plate look like 3 days ago. What is it descended from. What are its siblings. What did they look like? Is it moving faster or slower than they were? Etc.

Mono hunt organization. I cannot keep the zillion transfers from germ streak plates in order to save my fuckin life.

--

I also have a particularly physical approach. I am making this software for myself, and am unabashedly tailoring it to my specific processes. I want to be able to do voice input, sticker batch generation, printing, updates, photo triggers, etc, from the flow hood.

If you've ever seen a bartender run their esoteric 80s point of sale software so fast that you can't even read the screen, that's my north star.

Things like macro keyboard in the flow hood or foot pedal under the desk are both in play right now. The partially-constructed sticker queue is a first class interface area.

--

But honestly I have probably spent two hours on this in the last two weeks. Many, many other things are happening in life. As fun as it would be for this to be my day job, it isn't. I continue to write plate labels by hand. I also continue to put off my mono hunt

You mentioned you were comfortable with LLMs have you tried using orchestrated pipelines to plan the sprints and execute them? I think that might solve some of the issues you are describing, node/edge relationships, migrations, and general data handling.

I like your idea of occupatant(s), I am not sure how well that will hold up with fruiting/sporulation even with monos, but I'm very interested to see your work!

Imaging is currently only from above, but the final station design with have incorporate a camera below as well.

The PoS systems is a good north star, I hadn't considered that in my approach. I have a voice to text library I use regularly and it's already incorporated into my pipelines, I spun up a separate one for this. I would recommend trying that over the pedal.

I have been thinking about adding a camera over my workspace to process my actions to improve workflows and automate RCAs on contamination. Any thoughts in this area?

Looking forward to discussing this more in the future!

Yeah I use handy with parakeet v3 and love it. But always with a button to start and stop recording. Between music and talking to myself (and telling the cat to stfu) it's annoying having an always-on thing.

My experience so far is that the data modelling etc is a taste and intuition problem, and doesn't benefit from throwing more tokens at it. Ditto the UI. It gives me generic bootstrap CRUD patterns. Crass stuff. But that's fine. It's been a fun learning experience, finding the precise ways to express what I want. Often I only find out by seeing the wrong thing and identifying what's wrong with it.

The workflow and RCA stuff is fun if that's your deal, and based on the predictive plate thing it sounds like it. For me, all of those aspects are in a place where I don't feel the need to make them better. Not because they're perfect, just because I only care that they're adequate enough not to be a problem. One thing that's fun and useful is visualizing laminar flow as just the linear stream of particles streaming off of everything in front of the hood. That would be a fun thing to visualize and potentially instructive if you can see it while you work.

Would love to see some pics of this camera setup once you get things working (or not, WIP photos are also good)

What kind of automation do you have in mind?

It's automatically pulling entries up when scanned and will be pretty heavily assisted in terms of being able to speak a correct label into existence with minimal effort and print off multiple labels at once, etcetera. And photographing the plate is both automated and manual. It takes a photo from both top and bottom when the plate gets checked in, But the lid is usually on in that scenario, so you can trigger a photo manually later once the lid is off.

But I don't have any plans to automate physically applying the label or anything like that.

I respect your approach to data schema creation, I used to do it the same way and it worked great.

I cannot share the working prototype images in a larger forum, but I will gladly DM you them if you would like?

I have a sanitized version of the station guide I can share here, but also using proton to push an anonymous link is clunky, anyone know a better option?

On the automation comments, I am working on an expansion of this that will use a vending machine style system to collect each tray, scan, and then return the petri to it's shelf location, since my long pole currently is actually imaging plates daily.
