Using the metric system is fine. The ratio carries over. The most important part is gathering an understanding of field capacity. When you tightly squeeze a handful of the mix, only a drop should come out. Any less and you need to add more water, any more and you need to add more verm.

thanks for the answers.

to get it to field capacity i have to use 2:2:1 then. even then not a drop is coming out but itโ€™s almost coming out. should
be wet enough right?

I think the issue is that 2:1:1 as described in the PF tek is a ratio of volume. If youโ€™re using grams, thatโ€™s going to yield a very dry mixture cause verm is so light.

this. it'd be liters

probably yea
well how to measure 1L verm. in grams it would be the most accurate since you can have it on the scale.

thats why the imperil system doesnt make sense at all. haha
(dont hate me )

the brf is already mixed in there now. should it be enough for germinating spores if itโ€™s maybe a tad under field capacity? itโ€™s already in the jars. there will be just a few made.
are there any further recommendation then in the tek ( revs brf puck) to specifically germinate old spore swabs?
thanks for all the answers! i really appreciate it

anyone defending the imperial system is an innumerate cop lol :cop2::dumblol:

it's units of arbitrary volume, you could just use a rocks glass or any ol cup.

if you wanna revive something very stubborn and old, these are the big guns.

For sure. It's best for your brf mixer to go in the jar looking and feeling too dry. It should look like dry fluffy sand.

but if you were to squeeze it in your palm it would Clump together and stick like damp sand. Showing you that the moisture content is there.

So you should be good. You don't want a wet mess going in.

In my opinion squeezing brf mixture for Field capacity leads people astray all the time.

And that part should be taken out of the original tek.

Because it's not exactly the same as when we're checking Fields capacity for coir.

At least if you follow the ratios given in the recipe then you're definitely not going to get a drop out of that mixture.

And that leads people to think that theyb should continue to add more water until it does drip. But in my experience thats  too wet and you'll end up with way too much moisture after the pc.

In which case lots of times ends up turning out to be too wet. Trust me on this.. I have a lot of experience with PF Tek and have been through this tons of times with many others. And I've helped many others successfully in this matter. It actually comes up quite often throughout the year.

Best thing you can do is look at it visually. Like I said above does it look dry and fluffy but stick together and a nice little Clump when you squeeze it in the palm of your hand. If so then you're golden. You added the water so you know it's there even if it looks dry.

Basically stick with the recipe and ignore  your mind. When its  telling you this stuff isn't wet enough.

thanks that helps a lot! i will get them going.
thatโ€™s great advice thatโ€™s exactly what i was thinking about. still itโ€™s more water then the recipes but it wasnโ€™t dripping or anything it felt exactly like you described at 2:2:1.
appreciate it!

and i will read that post. im just starting out so i donโ€™t really wanna get into another tek (spend more money and energy)haha but i might have to.  i just have a few swabs left. thought the pucks will be the go just shoving it in and hoping for the best. it might be smarter to just cut a bit of the swab then. but iโ€™m always struggling handling the swab inside the SAB. i cant find a damn cookie rack or the like so i just use broken old petris to elavate.

is it ok to not dip them in sterilised water before? i really wanna avoid another contamination risk since my sterile technique is not 100%(yet).

Don't worry about moistening the swabs.  the moisture in the puck will be enough.

Yes, ratios convert equally no matter the system of measurement

I dont think it does.
1 cup of feathers doesnt weight the same as 1 cup of lead.

:whathesaid:

It has to be volum. 1 cup is almost 2,5dl so a close metric 2:1:1 would be 5dl:2,5dl:2,5dl :awesomenod:

Sweet mother of God! Whatโ€™s going on with you guys? Is todayโ€™s full moon getting to you or what?

:babypalm:

2:1:1 ratio โ€” Vermiculite:Water:BRF

By volume. Period.

Volume is much more reproducible for materials like vermiculite and flour, where density varies depending on how packed it is. Two people measuring 100 ml of flour can end up with completely different weights depending on how they fill the container.

Please don't make me grind rice just to post the results... :cryariver:

Is It Possible to Cultivate Mushrooms from Dried Gills?

I tried some strong, potent mushrooms in Koh Samui. I scraped some spores from the dried gills and wondered if I could grow my own. Is this possible, or is it a silly idea? Please advise.

Hey kirin1028!

Sure, it's definitely possible. The gills almost certainly contain spores, though it's hard to tell what condition they're in.

You could prepare agar Petri dishes and try to germinate them there, then clean them up from any potential contaminants.

Do you have any experience?

Hugs

I sterilized some jars with liquid culture solution. It is a LME LC nutrient Mix I bought from a trustable vendor.

After sterilizing for 16 minutes at 15 psi, I turned the PC off and let it cool down to lukewarm before opening the PC.

Then I closed the lids tightly and had a look at the jars.

This is what I see. The solution is transparent, but when left untouched for a while theres a white, faint white sediment that sits at the bottom of the jars. When gently swirling the jar the sediment moves and makes the previously clear solution look cloudy due to the particles floating everywhere.

Is this crystallization from the LME? Or maybe my lids were a bit too loose letting more water to evaporate leading to an over saturated solution?

and last but not least... does this looks safe to inoculate?

16 minutes doesn't seem like enough time to properly sterilize. I would at least do 30

And the sediment is ok, the myc will grow itself around the sediment like individual bases around each particle

If you want a more crystal clear  LC, try This Tek for next time

Here is a timetable for sterilizing from that tek based on volume:

Wow 30 min really? I kept reading 15-20 min leaning to the lower side if trying to avoid crystallisation. I could send them again to PC if necessary but Iโ€™m pretty sure I read from one of the og growers to do 15/20 min.
