Just a part of the life cycle. It will tear and the cap will start to open up. It will eventually drop spores. Nothing wrong with letting it open up and nothing wrong with harvesting.

Sure but what is in that 'anti-fog'?

I couldn't get straight answers when looking it up, different companies don't disclose their ingredients.

I did find this, from an eye-glass company

Some modern anti-fog coatings integrate nanoparticles, typically metal oxides like silicon dioxide (SiO2) or titanium dioxide (TiO2). These nanoscale particles enhance the hydrophilic behavior of the coating, creating a highly textured surface that pulls water flat through capillary action.

weird stuff, it would help if they disclosed their ingredients.

they could also have synthetic degergents/other synthetic surfactants

Returned back from a vacation to find a semp shoebox super dried out, the poor sub pushed out a small fruit.

Shall I make attempts to clone on agar?

I don't have any other genetics saved.

Just wanted to ask a quick question just grabbed this set-up which i think will work good. I can fit 4 (or 8 if i stack) of those 7quart shoeboxes in the big tote my question is where do you think is the best place to put the holes in the tote/shoeboxes? I figure im gonna run the shoeboxes with a 2/5 or a 1/6 ratio so 1qt spawn 6qt sub or 2qt spawn 5qt sub. What do you think, light at the end of the tunnel or am I SOL? Thanks for any help anyone can give.

Are those really shoeboxes? Like, are they made to breath? If that's the case they don't need holes at all. I would stick with a 1:4 ratio, some headspace is needed for passive air exchange.

If you plan on running the shoeboxes in the bigger tub I think it's best to always run 4 shoeboxes so it doesn't get too dry in there. If you don't have 4 shoeboxes ready at the same time you could always dubtub when the fruits run out of room in the shoeboxes.

I would probably not make any holes in the big tub either, just rest the lid on top of the latches.

Shoeboxes will have a gap between the tub and the lid even when latched, if you put shoes in a closed off box they'll go sour real fast and in our case the mycelium will stall. I suggest trying the same thing(rest the lid on the latches) and see what kind of surface conditions that gives you. If it gets too wet or too dry I would make holes ez dial style.

When you spawn at a 1:4 ratio the first time to one of the shoeboxes you'll have the opportunity to measure where you would place the holes, so do some measurements when you spawn in case you need to make holes for the next run

Do we think these tubs are getting enough fresh air, i notice the bases of the mushrooms are getting fuzzy, and was wondering if i should flip the lids up side down and let them get even more airflow.

The sides and bottoms of both tubs are covered in mushrooms lol, there growing everywhere except the top, Iโ€™m wondering if that is the first flush and if I should just harvest all of that and then punish them.

What is the generally recommended "Go to" casing recipe these days?

I've been out of the hobby for a while and common knowledge appears to have traveled a bit in the meantime. Last time I played in these waters things like jiffy mix and oyster shell were kept on the shelf, but that definitely doesn't seem to be the case (heh) now. I've tried the forum search but 10+ years of accumulated hearsay is a bit of a mess to shovel through.

That, more than the fuzzy feet, is the symptom that matters. I ignore that amount of fuzz on a grow unless it feels like there's moisture to spare.

But the common denominator on the other 5 sides are humidity / microclimate. Seems like the surface wants more moisture on or above it.

How much did you compress the cake when spawning to bulk? Stronger compaction helps the cake hug the walls and reduce how much it shrinks inward over time, which is what creates the favorable microclimate between cake and tub that competes with your top fruiting surface.

Apart from misting, all the options I know about are kinda janky. Flipping the cake, laying something like bubble wrap or wax paper *ducks* over the surface to mimic what the walls are doing, etc. In future grows, compression at spawn time is the right knob to turn for this. But since that ship has sailed... fuck it, maybe try some stuff .

For cubes? Just more coir mix (including verm or whatever if it's in there, you don't need to mix a separate batch).
