3rd times a charm?
    #29641168 -

Ok, so, I'm new....first time grower, making a lot of mistakes with contamination.  If you haven't read my threads/stories of failure, here's a previous thread about my mis-adventures. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/29629616

Its been told to me, and I've read over and over again that the "sterile" grow bags provided by online sellers are not sterile. Nor are their syringes to be trusted. I tried the grow bags twice now, and my experience seems to support that.  I got one more syringe of spores.  (I bought 3 initially).

PF Tek was suggested to me, as a way to maximize my odds of success. I'm onboard with that.  I have one 10cc syringe of Penis envy spores left to try.  Since I dont have a pressure cooker, or know how or have the equipment/time/space to deal with agar, or own a pressure cooker, I'm giving the jars a try.  I ordered pre-made up PF Tek jars from midwest grow kits (the same place I got my supposedly "sterile" grow bags, and these are supposedly sterile too) -yeah right.  I want to sterilize them myself, without a pressure cooker.  I do have a huge ass pot though, with a boil basket.

I have read that I can take my giant ass pot (with a well fitting lid) and boil basket, and put a couple inches of water in the bottom, put the full jars in the basket, and get a roiling boil going for 90 mins to 2 hours, without submerging my jars, and let them steam and they will be sterilized after letting them cool naturally.

Yes, no?  Anyone have experience with this? Will it work?  I dont want to shatter a jar, and have all that junk spill into my pot.  I also dont want to trust the sterilization technique that midwest grow kits used, because it has failed me twice in the past...now the syringe I cant really do anything about, but I was hoping to maximize my chances with fully sterile jars this time.  I will have 6 of them.

I am planning on taking my last 10cc spore syringe and injecting about 1.5 cc into each jar.  Each jar has 4 holes in it, so you are supposed to put some in each hole to make it colonize equally across the jar.  That only gives me enough for a tiny ass squirt into each hole.  Will this be enough?  I plan to sterilize the needle on the syringe with a lighter flame, and wipe the injection holes with alcohol before I stick the needle in each one.  (a step I didnt do last time)  I wiped the needle with alcohol (but it was probably already sterile as it came from a brand new sealed pack)

Does this sound like a good/reasonable plan with a fair possibility of success?  If I get 1 or 2 good jars, Id be a happy camper.

If this plan is bad, or you’d do something different let me know, and why.

You mentioned in another thread like this that you'd been trying for two years...what is it that is stopping you from buying a pressure cooker? It's basically the one required piece of kit. Can you go without it? Yeah...but if you're at all serious about this (and if you've been trying for two years I think you are) you need to just buy a pressure cooker. You'd be a million times better of skipping all these pre-made kits and making your own reusable grain spawn jars and pressure cooking them properly. You would have saved enough on premade kits to buy a pretty good pressure cooker if you just made your own grain jars if money is an issue. TFAL has one on Amazon for like $115-120.

I havent been trying for 2 years...dunno where you read that. I been trying for about 3 months.  Dont have the space, or reason to justify a pressure cooker. Id have to explain its purpose to the wife, and have a place to store it in a 850 sq ft house, which I dont have or want to do.

Yeah, you’re on the right track. Not sure if someone has linked this for you already, but follow it to the letter, and it’ll give you the best chance out there to get some fruits without a PC.

Did exactly this and steamed them in a stock pot my first few grows, and every single cake I ran flushed great.

you don't need to buy a extremely big pressure cooker. if you are doing it for personal consumption, you can just buy a small PC that ranges between 12-15psi.

stuff like instant pot already works, and i bet your wife would love it. i also think she would love a normal 15 psi pressure cooker from 7-15 liters/quarts, and you can use for what you want.

growing mushrooms is very productive man. a small shoebox can yield mushrooms for months.

if you still can't buy one, for whatever reason, then PF Tek is the most reliable.

or you can try broke boi tek, but people hate this tek here, even though i've seen a lot of good reports and people saying it work for them. so keep in mind that if you try this tek, is possible that it have a higher chance of going wrong.

If you do buy a small PC, take this into consideration

So my pf tek jars came from
Midwest grow kits yesterday.  I am re-sterilizing them right now in a giant pot with steam.

Also here’s what came Out of the last grow bag I tried….i just cut it out of the bag dumped it in the tub to take a look at it.  I assume this is trash?  Or is it?

I got the of tek jars steaming in this bad boy…

Has that fruited yet or waiting on 1st flush? I see pins and a few aborts. You'll probably get some fruit off it. Might want to rinse those aborts off though.

Also, consider making your own at home if you have the means. It's a lot cheaper than buying kits. You already have pot to steam sterilize.

Really?  It hasn’t fruited.  I was told by a couple people in a previous thread it looked like trash and to throw it away, but I only had pics of it still in the bag.  I cut it out today for a closer look. Up until a few mins ago it was sealed with no air exchange. Think there might be something there?  I’ll leave it in the Monotub and mist it for a while with some light and see what happens…

I clearly can’t tell wtf I’m looking at due to lack of experience and color blindness.

Do you see those really white dots across the surface of the cake you just opened and are about to throw away ?

I think they are called hyphal knots , and if its true and not some sort of camera/light missjudgement, you should be about 2 weeks away from harvesting.

If i read correctly and you are injecting spores directly into a sterilized bag of grain, you will get contamination 99% of the time.

Spores are inherently dirty,contaminated.
Nobody can take sterile spore prints.
All spore prints come from mushrooms that are exposed to air. So all spore syringes are contaminated to a higher or lesser degree.

You are supposed to clean spore syringes on agar before using.

You might be injecting directly into the sterile substrate if you have mycellium siringes, also known as liquid culture.

No amount of sterilization of the substrate will help if you inject spores.

Hope this helps.

Ps, get some petri dishes and agar and clean your culture, its not that hard, nor expensive.

Yes I do see those spots.  I hope you are right *crossing fingers*. That would be great.

Yes I am injecting spores into grain.  I know this isn’t ideal but I’ve explained a few times already why I can’t deal with Petri dishes and agar and pressure cookers with the wife and kids around in a 850 sq ft house.  This has to be kept on the down low.  I can’t justify all this weird stuff laying around when they can’t know about this.  I know it hurts my chances but I’m trying to work with what I can do secretly.  I’m currently waiting on my pf tek jars to cool down before using th last spore syringe I bought…

Maybe try this. It's relatively low key and less chance of contam. Spores to brf is fine and making your own jars also less chance.

It's how I've done it and have decent success. I don't need much magic so the yields are good by me.

Cheers

Remember to shake the spore syringe well before inoculation so the spores are properly mixed, as they tend to settle on the sides.

I assume you're using jars with four inoculation holes. How much liquid are you planning to use per hole?

I usually use ~0.3 mL per hole, but you can definitely go lower.

Hugs

I just injected the PF tek jars now.  Spread a 10cc syringe over 6 jars using 2 holes each.  Yes they have 4 holes each drilled. The other 2 are covered with foil. I used a fresh never opened package sterile needle, and wiped the tops of the jars with alcohol.  They were steamed over a roiling boil for 2 hrs then allowed to cool naturally.

I'm also giving that last grow bag cake some time with light and airflow, maybe see what it does.  IDK.  Some of you said it was garbage, some said it looks promising.  Ill see.  It had zero airflow till today.

Here’s my cake from my second attempt again a few days after being in the fruiting chamber…I kinda think I see some good action here…maybe.  It’s the same cake I pictured earlier in this thread for my 2nd attempt.
