Golden Teacher Third Grow Cycle

Starting up a third grow cycle of Golden Teachers from spores harvested from my second grow cycle.

Changes applied to this grow cycle:

- Switched from agar+petri dishes to nopour
  agar, using small glass jars.
  + 100% success rate in having clean,
    uncontaminated agar plates.
  Last time i fought long and hard to get
  clean agar plates.

- Raised sterilization time on my 7 psi
  pressure cooker to 240+ minutes.

Random "whoa! wtf is this" moment :
Still had some agar plates from last year kept in fridge, sealed.
Sent some to grain and instead of golden teachers i got schizopylium mushrooms.
(thanks Derrayled for identifying it)

Timings:
Spore germination and transfers about 4 weeks.

Jars inoculated about a week ago, very slow growth, i think popcorn is not hydrated enough.


The waiting game starts :smile:

Good luck! FYI, I used an 8 psi pressure cooker before I got my presto and I ended up doing 5 hour runs to be sure that the grains were actually sterilized.

If you have an insta pot they're about 12.5 psi I believe. Run my grain on high for about 3 and a half hours and has worked like a charmπŸ‘ŒπŸ½πŸ„β€οΈ

Hmmm, never actually tought of looking at instapots, might try to search what's available in this country, but if the price tag is not "dirt cheap", i might as well just jump to a propper american imported pressure cooker, if i ever decide i need one.

Did you ever need to re-hydrate your grains ?

I think i realy under-hydrated a lot of my popcorn jars.
40-60 minutes boil time and i kinda ran them for about 5-10 minutes without water in the pressure cooker.....

Made some new ones a few days ago, boiled for 2 hours (120 minutes), double the time than the first ones and pc cycle went ok, with water left at the end.

On this new batch, the growth is like 5 times faster that the first batch.



Left = new batch, about 3-4 days
Right = old batch, about 10-12 days.


Would injecting some sterilized water in the old jars have any chance of success or i'm better off just either let them be or make them again ?

I haven't needed to rehydrate jars, but I also wouldn't try it. I think it's best to start over than try to salvage a couple grain jars, the odds of success seem too low to be worth the effort.

The grandsons of my original gt spore print seem to be doing fine :laugh:



As a side note, i did end up adding sterilized water to half of my un-hydrated popcorn jars. I don't really care if they contaminate and fail, just to see what happens.

If my good jars finish, i think it's going to be more than i need anyway :laugh:

So i injected about 7/10 mL of sterilized water into the 330 mL jars and to my surprise, the water was all absorbed in less than 24 hours.


My sterile technique/sterilization times and methods have improved thanks to the good advices from good growers on this site, but i must give the cherry on the pie to the no-pour agar method.

I was so, so, so much surprised to see all my agar jars just work and stay sterile.
When i made poured batches into petri dishes, always had contamination. Always. Always!
With no-pour agar in small jars i had 100% success rate, no bacteria, no molds , it just works !

Nice work! Iβ€˜d like to hear more about the no pour agar tek you used since I also have annoying issues with contamination of plates after inoculation.

As simple as putting agar into small glass jars and pressure cooking them.

Instead of pressure cooking the agar in a bottle then pouring it out into the petri dishes, just prepare the same agar type, place in jars, close, pc.

The downside is that it's harder to see into them, at least mine that have not a transparent lid, and the agar might splatter a bit on the sides....

but if you have trouble pouring clean, uncontaminated petri dishes, or don't have access to petri dishes, this is best solution.

The good hydrated jars have colonized about 30% and today i will shake them.



Should i wait 2 more days befor i shake?

Status update:
About 6 days after shake



They seem to be doing fine enough
colonization might not be the fastest but it is progressing at a steady pace.

I think in one more week , maybe 10 days, they will be ready for spawning.
This ahould bring the total time to about 3 weeks from agar inoculation to spawn, wich is in line with my previous timings.

Ps: i have also shaken some of the unhydrated corn jars and most of them have stalled. Maybe one or 2 are showing signs of recovering.

PPS: the unhydrated jars into wich i injected sterilized water, did not develop any contamination but the progress has almost stalled there as well. The corn was waaaay too dry to begin with.

I'm going to keep the one maybe 2 jars of unhydrated popcorn jars tht have recovered and remove all the rest.

PPPs: I'm having a hard time finding proper choir, and i do not want to buy again from internet....

the only coco choir that i was able to find is very gross, not finely ground, more like big pieces of something that resembles wood.

Do any of you know of good substitutes for choir if i do not manage to find it ?

Why not source from the internet?  Coir is a very basic gardening supply and not commonly associated with mushroom cultivation.  This shouldn’t be an opsec concern imo.

not concerned (too much)about opsec, but last time i bought from internet i got choir mixed with other nutrients, so i want to see before i buy.

I live in a place far far away from where coconut trees grow :grin:

Try to look into reptile bedding in online pet shops. And since you're in Europe, you could try to find the Organic Way brand by Seklos. That's the one I've been using for almost a year now and it works great.

Found it, in a pet store, and it has a reptile drawn on the pack :grin: !

They had both types, the chunky one and the fine one, and they placed the fine one at the very back and behind the chunky one, as it was much less expensive :laugh:


On a side note, this winter travels brought me to a place where i could get a pan.copelandia spore print and another cube spore print (i forgot the name because i have thrown away all labels for importing purposes :ducklol: but had something to do with asia/east )

So i put to agar :
- Copelandia
- Forgotten cube
- Another batch of my GT gen.3 spores

I am really interested to see if i will manage to get the Copelandia to fruition.
From what i read untill now, they should be stronger than cubes and a bit harder to grow, but not much different from the cubes.

Hopefully my life is going to settle down for the next couple of months so i have time to dedicate to this hobby :grin:

I think the jars are about to be ready for spawning, i'm going to let them consolidate about 3-5 days more.

I had 2 jars that were a bit quicker to completely colonize and i have already spawned those 2, so these ones can wait a bit more. ( my patience is really put to the test :smile:)

And i'm using the same method as in my first grows :
small boxes in bigger boxes containing water.


- no, i did not make all that spawn from only 2 330mL popcorn jars.
+ yes i also prepared some wheat grains.
 
And i have some more spawn from my first iteration, but mostly were bacterial/or i grew a completely different mushroom lol..., so my hopes goes toward this new batch of popcorn.

Any good suggestions / improvements will be apreciated.

The early spawned popcorns have developed thrichoderma.
I forgot them under the sun for a full day and when i returned they developed a really pungent smell...then thric.

The regular sppawned popcorn and grains seem to be doing fine for now.





I will refrain to expose them to direct sunlight for 12 hours.
