My friend has little to no experience with mushrooms, should he attempt to grow golden teachers?

If I were a newbie, I'd grow B+, or any of the Thai strains.

GT's are newbie friendly, GT's will be your best friend. Sometimes they are a bit slow to start colonising. You shouldn't have any problems with GT's that you won't get with any other strains.
Good luck

Gts tend to come into their own when using a strong fruiting isolate - multi spore innoculation (pftek) can often give strange spore-matches that dont fruit well...

Just innoculate as normal. What BM is referring to is isolating a strain on agar.
Good luck

HI, I'm a little concerned about my golden teachers... I know they can be a bit slow to colonize but my question is how slow is slow? I mixed my fully colonized grain bags into 2.5 lb sterile soil grow bags on New Years Eve. The B+ bags that were mixed on the same day have been fruiting for a few weeks... some of the bags are on their 3rd flush. But the golden teachers are barely 50% colonized... and certainly don't seem to be turning as white as the B+. I will say that it has been unseasonably cold in Southern CA so about a week ago I moved them next to the wall heater to see if that will help speed up the process... it doesn't seem to have mad a difference. Any advice would be appreciated!

I'm really struggling to figure out how to upload a decent photo. Just exported my .jpgs to .pdf to try to show you guys a pic but I'm not sure if you can see any detail because I had to reduce the file so much... apologies for the bad quality!

By your name it says pics click it, then click uplaod... I live in socal, and I know what you're saying. I have everything in a tub with a heating mat(spacing from bottom contact of course), seems to keep it about right. I have B+, GT, and Mazatapec colonizing right now at 83° some will say it's too hot, but the mycellium I am growing is vigorous at that temp, it slows down below 80 or above 85. B+ and GT seem to really like popcorn. I'm trying it with WBS as we speak, just shot up a 4qt bag of it with B+. Tomorrow is the rest of the GT to another 4qt bag. I spaced that syringe out, made agar dishes as well, just to preserve the variations from spores I received.

Thanks Mr Funguy! Were you able to see the image I uploaded? Do you think I just need to exercise a little more patience or do you think they are contaminated / stalled?

Just wait. The one thing I've learned from this forum is to wait. Impatience kills all grows... It takes a while because of fluctuations with temp, humidity, etc. Plus 2.5lbs is a LOT, lol...

Edit- if you did upload one, click reply for this post, look for the box with the mountain and sun above the script box, click it, go to my pics and click the link for the pic (or have your pics open in a new window or tab), copy and paste it in the white script box for the reply. Kinda complicated but once you get the hang of it, it gets easier..
